Allan, both bikes you mentioned should work fine. There are a lot of happy people with bikes from both companies. Are they the best? No. Are they innovative? No. Are they sexy looking? Not likely. Do they go when you pedal them? Yes they do.
There have been quite a few ss mtb's around in Michigan with happy riders. I would give preference to nashbar over bikesdirect just because nashbar has better customer service and support should something come up but bikesdirect is an okay option if that's not a concern. Keep in mind that bikesdirect is done pretty much only online, I'm not sure they even have a phone number where you can call them. I had a warranty issue that they did great with but it took a long time because it was all through emails.
Whatever gets you riding is a good choice.
Just getting started in cross and Im wondering if anyone has purchased a single speed from Nashbar or bikes direct. They have those steel frame single speeds and I was wondering if any one has one and what you think of it. OH, I'm older and just want to race to have fun. Thanks
