Started cross in Portland on a Schwinn Super La Tour, broke the fork crown and got a free motobecane, broke the seat stays and purchased my first cross bike, Cramerati- steel. Promoted the Portland Cross Series from about 1986 or 7 until 1993 when I moved to Asheville. Learned how to cyclo cross from my good friend Michael Sylvester.

PIR was great! Good start - from about 4 rows back to 10th coming out of first turn. Rode my arse off for 2 laps to settle in. Had a couple of riders get by when I crashed 2X but finished 14th: best result in a while. Some sections of PIR infield course were very tough: 6" of sticky peanutbutter mud. Had to hit those sections fast and maintain momentum. Felt like 500W efforts every time.

It's definitely a strong group this year. I'm not sure if it's the $2,500 in prize money coming from Raleigh or what but riders have been showing up to race. And dispite the smaller ss fields that category has been flying!
