Newb to CX and just moved to NH.  I am riding a Crux EVO from last year with OEM 700cx38 Trigger Sports (I also have a set of Tracer Pros 700x33c that my old LBS recommended for my hybrid) and as the…Continue

Hybrid to CX Upgrade

Started this discussion. Last reply by Timmy R Sep 23. 2 Replies

I am looking for a new bike after riding my hybrid (Specialized Sirrus) for just over 2-years.  I've thought about what kind of riding I want to do and since I was introduced to CX 2-weeks ago, I am…Continue

"Great...I have 3 LBS's and I'll bet the one that is really into cross will have a different take.  I"m going stop by there today if I have time to grab 3 tubes."

"Great advice, Kris. While I shied away from latex initially, your observations are spot on. Currently running that set up (with a bit of sealant) in a PDX front/ Slant Six rear combo and can lower the pressure to where I can really rail corners.…"

"Timmy, your LBS guy doesn't understand the different properties latex brings to the table then.  It does take a bit more care and handling during install but, nothing crazy.  Latex is typically what is used inside tubulars (every high…"

"Sweet.  Thanks.  I'll grab some next time I am at LBS..pretty sure they carry them."

"Latex tube recommendation was right on. Also, you can remove the valve core and add about an ounce or two of sealant (such as Stan's, CaffeLatex, etc.) This way you could pinch the tube and still keep riding, but if the pinch is a bigger tear…"

"Will do Kris..I mentioned that to my LBS guy and he REALLY did not like latex.  His opinion was that they are more likely to puncture/rupture, so I bought regular butyl tubes. I'll grab some latex tubes next and see how that goes."

"Do yourself a favor and get yourself some latex tubes.  They are 3X the price, but seriously reduce your chance of pinch flats. "

"Standard Butyl tubes lightly coated in baby ppwder. Yesterday I went back out on new tubes and rode for an hour at 50 and 45 psi with no issues and what I thought was fair to good traction.  Headed back out to MTB trails today to see how they…"

"Type of tube?  Butyl or latex?"

"Fail Today on cross track. Pinch flat at 35 psi. Spare repaired tube not repaired well enough. Back to the drawing board. Maybe 33c and 40 psi."

"33c Tracer Pros rode pretty good around 30 psi yesterday. I think I felt them slide a little but not much.  At 25 psi I pinch flatted them.  I think around 30-35 psi is the sweet spot for those, at least on th eMTB trails I've been…"

Timmy R replied to Greg Basa's discussion How many CX races did you watch before racing?
"Understood.  I have watched the videos and at this point my mobility in my right hip is a the limiting factor.  I can jump and mount with some success but not consistently yet.  I am going to work on both my mobility and my mount.…"

"Thnx Jeff. I have a Topeak.  For as much as I seem to decide to dismount late (and fall) a cheap option is a good call."

"Hi Timmy,  I have a cheap one like this. http://www.slime.com/shop/digital-tire-presta-gauge-20030/ It's been just as accurate as my SKS gauge and survived plenty of abuse. Have fun!"

"Thanks again Kris...I can certainly quickly hop on with a pedal and as I'll likely be in the back, I am sure the threat is low to others. "

"Thnx Kris.  I have a frame pump on my bike and a digital pressure gage (that does not go out with me...too many falls).  Next ride I am going to drive to where I bike (its close so I usually ride) and bring my pump and guage and do…"
