Anyway, stock up if you're on a budget and need some true sew-ups (as opposed to tubeless Tufo / Clement).

Tires for early season racing in Pac NWtag:cowbell.cxmagazine.com,2015-01-20:1198434:Topic:1622582015-01-20T06:08:08.563ZDolan Halbrookhttps://cowbell.cxmagazine.com/profile/DolanHalbrook

Hi all,

Last year I raced the early season (GPRT series, Jul-Sep) on a set of Vittoria XGs set up tubeless, which I found.. adequate. I didn't have any technical issues with them, but I wasn't thrilled about their grip or suppleness. Later in the season I bought a secondhand tubular wheelset (Dugast Rhinos on Ksyrium SLs) and found religion. Later in the season I bought a secondhand tubular wheelset (Dugast Rhinos on Ksyrium SLs) and found religion. They were on another level, and I could definitely corner faster and trust that the tire would stick.

However, as I understand it, the Rhinos are a mud tire. I've been contemplating picking up a second tubular wheelset for the early season, where most of the races are dry grass, dirt, bark chips, pavement, gravel, and sometimes sand.... pretty much all dry stuff. I'm sure the Rhinos would be fine but I'd hate to wear them down prematurely, and perhaps I could pick up a bit of speed?

What would you recommend as an early season combination? I was thinking a set of Clement MXPs (or MXP front, LAS rear) would do well to complement the Rhinos, but I'd love to hear what you all are thinking.

I pick up two sets of identical HED Kermesse wheelsets here locally in MN last winter from a colleague who raced them one season and keeps his stuff in fantastic condition. They are about 2 years old now and were originally a custom deal with HED (local company) for his local cycling team. They are not the HED C2 rims but are close in width at 21mm. I don't believe the wider rims matter as much with tubulars. I was planning to use one set as muds and the other set up for dry conditions. …

File tread tire and rear tire has some sealant in and has held up fine. I can also throw in a used pair of Vittoria XG 34c tubulars, 220tpi. They have some old glue and some tread left. I bought these used to have as a spare set in case I needed one, but I never did. (not pictured)

I also have a rear Ultegra 28h hub that can be laced up for an extra rear wheel.

This is a great way to try out some tubulars and really get the advantage of running low pressure. $275 for the whole package. If you don't want the extra rear hub, we can work something out. You pay for shipping from Los Angeles, or pick up if you are in the area.
