yeah... 'cross bikes do make really great commuters, but if you putting in serious commuting miles in all conditions, etc. expect to do a lot of maintenance and replace things often -- not the best situation to be in if you race the same bike on the weekends...

Count me in also (at least when my cross bike will be all built up). I currently commute on my road bike, but looking forward to the day I will on my Italian Stallion. I love to bike commute... nothing beats my "race-like" commutes back home in the evening!

I built my Bianch Axis specifically for commuting first, road training second, and CX racing 3rd. The only difference is that I use bigger touring tires for commuting. There is some argument out there that fatter tires provide a better ride with comparable rolling resistance and efficiency. I'm rollin' on 38C Schwalbe Marathon Cross all seasons. Having checked the internet it was really easy to find a few articles written in magazines where the Axis, specifically, was used. Really for commuting…

Really for commuting disc brakes are ideal, and I often wonder what geometry differences there are between a Trek Portland and X0. I use my Poprad. I use my Poprad. It even has eyelets for a rack that I can put on and off quickly. The only problem is that it gets used and abused more, so this has been relgated to the B bike.

Does anyone have any experience using Planet Bike fenders on a gravel road commute? I want coverage for cross tires so I don't have that signature "cross look" when I get to work in muddy conditions. Thanks!

Heck yes. I keep a separate set of wheels for the road. I'm getting it down to a science... Lights, fenders, and wheels in about a half-hour. Just like a Nascar pit stop, yo.

I have an Airborne Carpe Diem 3/2.5 Ti custom SS 'cross bike that I use to commute to/from work on. Steelman fork, fenders, and a BOB Yak trailer to haul stuff in as well. I have been using a 'cross bike to commute on for 8 years.

I do, that is actually what got me into CX bikes - commuting. It has nice tire/fender clearance. More up right fit than a road bike and most ones <$2500 have rack/fender mounts in the rear

I recently purchased a 2009 Kona Jake the Snake for use as a commuter and weekend racer. I am looking for a clip on/off fender, any suggestions? I like the Axiom Fastback DLX fenders, but they are too narrow for the stock 35mm tire. I am thinking of buying a second set of rims/cassette/road tire for commuting. Cheers!<br />
