The Bridgestone MB1 moutain bike that was marketed in 95 was a classic. It had lugged forks, Tange Prestige tubing and geometry very, very close to a road bike. That bike climbs as good as any road bike I've ever ridden.

I've had it since it was new and it has very few miles on it as mountain biking never really got me as excited as the road.

Any of you familiar with that bike and does it have the potential, with equipment mods, to make a decent CX bike?

Keith,
the one big limitation is going to be tire choice. hutchinson and schwalbe make narrow, 26" cross tires, and conti has a 1.5" one too. but if you want to go to tubulars ever, you'd be out of luck in tire choices. one option could be to try to run one of the few tires avail tubeless - that could be a neat option.

you don't have to mod much. you prob don't need the granny gear, but can run the thing with flat bars if you just wanna give 'cross a try without spending much $.

the nice thing about cross is you can run pretty much whatever in non-uci races, if you find you like the sport, upgrade equipment later. but if you know you're already into it, you've got a bit of time to find a good bike and get it dialed before the season.

good luck.
Andrew-I like the looks of that old Bridgestone MB1 a lot and it handles like a dream. I'll spend a few bucks on it and see how it goes. I'll be checking out the tubeless option today.

(Your sure right about the granny gear!)

Thank you very much for your input.

Keith
sweet, forgot to mention, just take off the bar ends if you have 'em - they were popular back then!

you inspired me to dig out my mb3 and get it rolling. i wanted to make that into a ss for a while...

I may just put some road bars on that MB1 and tinker it into a SemiCycloMountain Cruiser. That bike has a SoftRide Suspension stem on it. Those were on the market for about a year and then go recalled.

Have you guys used or tried any of the suspension seat posts? I wouldn't mind picking one up but there are so many of them, at prices all over the board.
I found some 26" Schwalbe's for about $26 a piece and though not the fastest rolling tires they work pretty well. I believe I got them from www.westernbikeworks.com
Hamilton-I notice that you are in Orem. I lived in Salt Lake for years and years and moved backd down here to AZ 4 years ago when my parents health begin to fail. I love that SLC area-great trails, fantastic road rides and some outstanding golf courses. I get up there a lot on business. It wouldn't take a whole lot for me to move back up there.
I will admit that I feel pretty lucky to live here, mountain biking, road biking and a great cyclocross series.
