First off, plan for 45 "minutes of hell". I've done a lot of bike renting on my travels and the bikes you get never quite measure up your own bike which has your fit dialed in, etc. What I do now is get a box from my LBS, usually free, and pack it up and check it. Depending on the airline it could be $50-150 each way but if you don't tell them its a bike or give a little white lie you may get by with paying less or nothing. This is risky though.
