I have a spare set of old DT Swiss hubs and spokes that I'd like to use to build up a training wheelset for both my CX bike (2012 Spec Crux Disc) and my MTB. I'd have my LBS do the build, but I was going to try and scope out some black friday deals for the rims.
What do I need to know to ensure that my hubs and rims are compatible besides spoke count? And can you recommend a rim that will make a good training setup for both my CX and MTB? I'm partial to Stan's NoTubes and would love to stay with them.

I'm partial to Pacenti myself. The SL23 would make a great CX rim, but CX and MTB? A CL25 maybe, but that is a pretty wide rim for a CX tire. I'd call and ask. Other wise Velocity A23s or something like that maybe. Other wise Stan's CX rimes will work.
Spoke hole count is one thing that must match, yes. The other issue is rim width. MTB tires take a wider rim than CX. There's going to be a compromise in there somewhere.
