Hey everyone, I'm obviously new here. I didn't see any guidelines or rules for posting, so let me know if this is in the wrong place.

I bought an old Cilo beater last summer, and rode it for 4 months. It slowly died, and the snow set in. I don't want to spend the time or money it would take to get it working again.

I'm looking into the Motobecane Fantom Cross CX, on bikesdirect, for a couple of reasons. My commute around town includes a lof of gravel/ dirt, curbs up and down, etc. Cyclocross seems to be the right bike for me because it has the ability to be great on, and off road.

I do have a 600~ hard budget, and a 500~ soft budget. I've looked for quite some time now, and I really don't know enough to snag a bike of craigslist or ebay, i don't know what to look for honestly.

I'm looking for some recommendations, and Ideas. I'm looking to buy within the  next month if possible.

Hi Jeramy P,

Cyclocross bikes can be great commuter bikes. I know a lot of people who use them for that. My suggestion to you, based on your statements that you don't know much about bikes, would be to buy your bike from a local bike shop and not online.

Reason being is that you will need to assemble the bike your self (or pay a shop to do it for you) if you buy the bike online. However, if you are mechanically inclined and know how to build a bike please ignore my comments.
I would call myself mechanically inclined, I did a lot of repair on my Cilo, so I know my way around, just not that well.
