My CX bike had a creak which became ever louder when I stood on the pedals (up hills, sprinting).

The eventual solution? Clean all dirt off the rear dropouts and skewer. Then smear grease on the skewer and also the inside and outside faces of the rear dropouts on the frame.

For now, the Principle of Silence is being observed properly and I can ride in peace.

Good catch. I found out the source of my creak was a frame cracked on down tube AND seat tube just above BB. Yow!
