EDITORIAL REVIEW
New Alpha Q fork offers lighter ride, excellent precision and generous mud clearance

Alpha Q has given its CX 20 ($570) carbon Cyclocross fork a total makeover with a design they've been working on since the summer of '05. By redesigning the structure and shape, this Alpha Q shaves 70 grams off the old model and still improves stiffness and torsional rigidity. Ours weighs in at 471 grams with an uncut steerer. Offset is 47mm and cantilever posts are made of titanium. It still uses the epoxy-in-alloy insert instead of the traditional compression plug, but it's claimed to offer structural support to the steerer and often comes in lighter than other setups. Some advice: If you're building up a new bike you have to use a little added care since you only have 2cm that you can trim after setting the insert.

On the bike the CX 20 offers everything we look for in a good 'cross fork. Steering precision is excellent, tracking true even in the rough and brake deflection is minimal. Mud clearance is generous and the AQ's light weight is appreciated when shouldering the bike. Aesthetically, the straight blade look is sharp but we do have one minor quibble. Logos on the fork leg have a fake carbon fiber weave inside the Q. A minor thing really but we'd like to see a peak at the real stuff underneath or just nothing. On the upside, the CX 20 does come with a three-year warranty and a crash replacement policy. The CX 20 is an excellent choice for any crosser wanting a lightweight, excellent-handling fork to upgrade a stock unit or build a dream race bike.
