And now for something completely different....
I'm here doing some big pimpin' of NoTubes Iron Cross. Iron Cross is North America's original 'cross race.
This year's race is on October 9 and on offer are 100K and 50K options. Both are single laps events and both consist primarily of gravel, dirt and paved roads with a bit of singletrack thrown in for fun and a pretty nuts "run-up" since this is a 'cross race and all. You'll also find what may well be the biggest death spiral going and definitely the one with the most people in it anywhere to start things off.
Bike choice is tough. We recommend the 'cross bike - we really do think it is a good choice, particularly if you're a good bike handler and can rock the narrow tires in the singletrack - but mostly because Iron Cross is all about the experience of riding a 'cross bike in this sort of terrain. But, we welcome mountain bikes and have to admit that an mtb with a little narrower tire setup would make for a solid choice on this course. Basically, choose your own adventure!
We put this thing on in the woods of south central Pennsylvania at the best time of year to ride a bike around these woods with the trees starting to burst forth with color.
Come on out and join us. Yep, it is completely different and well worth the adventure. The new 50K course is perfect if you're not wanting to go too long but still get in a good ride. The 100K is the original bad boy.
Iron Cross is also the third stop in 2011's National UltraCross Series. www.UltraCX.com. Four like minded events - Hilly Billy Roubaix, 3 Peaks USA, Iron Cross and Southern Cross have come together to start this thing off right. Iron Cross becomes the final stop in the series starting in 2012. Check it out and find new uses for those 'cross machines of yours.
Cheers,
Kuhn
