34/16 is great for spinners. I ran that last season. Upgrading to a 36/16 becuase I am able to push bigger gears w/ more training under my belt. 43/18 is a tad high for any mud/hills, same with the ridiculous 41/16.

So far, 43x18 is the only one that works...sort of. There's a bunch of slack in the chain, but not enough to make the chain come off.  I've tried 44/18, 42/19, everything around there and it is all way too tight.

I'm not sure if you've seen the Eccentric hub from White Industries; it would solve all of your chain length problems.

Yes, I've used it, and it works, but it also costs a lot more and adds a ton of weight when you add the freewheel. 

 

I got 34/16 to work really well, just a little tight.  I'll ride it for a while and see how it goes.  I'd like to get the 32/14, it should work better, but can't find any 172.5 cranks with the 104mm bcd or capabilities to run a 32 except for, you guessed it, white industries.

Scroll down and you’ll see that they make a 32 tooth chain ring that can run on a 94 or 110 BCD crank set.

A little pricy I know, but you could run 32/14 on compact cranks.

The 34x16 worked all year without a single problem.  The jamis is 425mm chainstays(published) and the gearing was pretty good for fast ss races.  Chain stretched just a little, but not enough for the chain to ever come off.
