I'm so new to this that my bike's still in the mail. I went to Luxembourg to check out a local cx race and noticed the course looked like a really fast, really fun mountain bike course. There were about 3 switchbacks going down hill (pretty steep) with hay blocks to stop riders from going over. There was a lot of alt. changes and single trail also. This is the first race I've ever seen---are they usually like that?

i'd say that switchbacks on a descent are pretty rare, but ups and downs, off-camber sections, and sections of course where there's only one usable line are relatively common. the euro courses seem to have more challenges, at least at the top level. the beauty of 'cross is that the courses vary so much, and also change a lot based on weather. you never really know what in store for you, although as reported here, the bigger euro courses don't change much at all year to year so pros get used to one course at each location.
