I race CX at about 195. Am not easy on my wheels... Run 32 3x major toms with DT Swiss Revolutions/comps (DS). Have not trued a wheel after a build yet. Even built up a MT rim and glued it the day before a race... havn't touched that wheel either.

32h with a good wheelbuilder will give you all the strength you are looking for

From what I have been reading about (same size and power rider like you) is that we should really have two sets of wheels. But with those two sets your best bet is to stick with similar width wheels as it will save you have to constantly re-adjust your brakes. With that said, the Velocity A23 have a lot of people impressed with what they can do and the abuse they can take. But the same can be said for the XR300/XR270/XR19W.

Will you be building these yourself or having someone build them? You could always look into the Asian hubs like Novatec, Dati, Circus Monkey, and BikeHubStore for a cheaper alternative that seemingly have good results (though I have heard it is better to run a cassette with an aluminum spider to save your freehub body).

My rear on my Jake is starting to need constant truing (I ride some pretty rough roads and like to bunny hop potholes and large cracks) so I am thinking I am going to need at least a rear soon here. Looking at the build I was thinking of (Kinlin XR270/X19W, BHS Superlight Hubset, Sapim Race (DB) spokes, dt swiss nipples) with me building them myself it would cost me a little less than $300 with shipping and everything.
Ok, so I'm struggling with ro…tag:cowbell.cxmagazine.com,2012-03-09:1198434:Comment:1262962012-03-09T21:25:49.941ZJeffrey Davishttps://cowbell.cxmagazine.com/profile/JeffreyDavis

Thoughts? Can i truly find a build that is reasonably lightweight enough, strong enough, and $500 or less that can pull double duty as CX and road wheels...or am i better off just going with different dedicated sets?
As Keith Bontrager said, "Str…tag:cowbell.cxmagazine.com,2012-03-09:1198434:Comment:1262912012-03-09T16:56:18.901ZCarlos Matuteshttps://cowbell.cxmagazine.com/profile/CarlosMatutes
As Keith Bontrager said, "Strong. Light. Cheap. Pick any two."
A bit more hub weight isn't going to be all that noticeable while riding, and I'm guessing the extra weight won't be too big a problem for you...
Shimano hubs aren't the sexiest choice, but they're durable and easily rebuildable.
Ultegras, or even 105s, would be a good choice for a rider your (my) size.

I've talked to some guys that say the velocity road hubs are weak and have some design flaws. Any opinions on that? Is that something velocity has since fixed?

If not, what other DURABLE hubs would yall suggest that are at least comparable in price and weight to the Velocity. FYI, the velocity road front hub is $64.99 (80g) and the rear is $109.99 (250g).

I am on the xr270's. I race not only race cross on them but also short track. I bet I have over 40 races on them. Also I ride MTB trails with 45mm tires. I have beat the heck out of them with not even a truing needed. I weighed about 180 when I got them although my weight is about 165 now.

Drive side on a wheel is much higher tension to keep the wheel dished correctly - this is of course only for the rear wheel. Typically, drive side spokes and nipples are the nipples that break from pure riding stress (not hitting a stump).
