I see a pretty fair number of bikes with top-routed front der. cables only to use a pulley. So why not use a top pull derailer? They have been used on MTB's for quite some time. Maybe it because there was not a cage optimized for the slightly larger chainrings on most cross bikes?

I am running the Speen Umlenker on both my cross bikes and they work perfect. It makes makes your bottom pull road derailleur a top pull: http://www.speen.de/speen*_en/products.html
