I have 2001 Trek X01 that I bought for my first 'cross season last year. I rode it in four races and it performed well enough. I'm in the process of replacing the headset, bb, brakes, etc. and wondering if I should be worried about a frame that old. There are several spots where the frame has been nicked down to the bare metal (big spot on the ds chainstay, some small spots on the headtube and fork).

I know aluminum has a limited number of impact cycles and I don't want the fork shearing on me during a race this season (I'm planning on at least eight races). So would you just race on it or spring for a new frameset?

i would replace the fork (if its aluminum) if for no other reason than aluminum forks are heavy, ugly, and ride like shit. if the frame is going to fail, it will be at the welds, so definitely inspect them regularly to make sure everything looks good. also, how much do you weigh? if you are on the lighter side (sub-175lbs) you are probably fine. bottom line, check the welds regularly, especially after a crash/impact or just buy a new frame and save yourself the hassle.
