A group for the guys and gals that have big hearts and even bigger bib-shorts! Whether you are a Clydesdale or a supporter this is the group for you. Welcome to the Stable!
just wanted to jump in on the Clydesdale and Athena posts... I started a company focused on meeting our (yeah, I weigh 350) needs. Along with building wheels, I also sell bottom brackets, chains, etc.
But, more to the point of the recent comments, I am trying to compile a list of all known Clydesdale/Athena apparel so I can offer a one stop shop for clothing. So far I carry Mt Borah and Terry, and am working on a few others (Louis Garneau, etc). I just email Tough Chic (thanks for the info!), and hopefully they will be on board, too.
If you can think of anyone that you would like to see carried, let me know! I'm tired of feeling like an outsider in this sport, and I am doing what I can to make it easier on us :)
Chris -- great idea about Clydesdal Cycles. Some clothing bits:
1. Primal wear does offer "expanded" womens' sizing but their womens' 3X jersey fits a woman with about a 42" chest. Not super-impressive.
2. Tough Chik has recently changed their size patterns so check with them before bringing in a whole buncha stuff. Their 2011 shorts may not fit the same as their 2010 model.
3. Squadra makes shorts labeled Womens' XL that will fit to about a 35" waist. Check with them to see if they might offer expanded sizing for women in the future. NICE shorts.
4. J & G Cyclewear (formerly known as Jackson & Gibbens) has been around for a zillion years and has one of the most impressively expansive size ranges for bike-cut rainwear in the industry. (Well-made stuff; their "Waterproof-Breathable" rain jacket is one of the nicest out there!) Size range extends to fit mens 52" chest in some items and rainpants go to something like a 48" waist. Not womens' specific but their unisex sizing will fit over some hips. (I can wear a mens' large over my jeans in their rain pants.)
They mostly do online retail but maybe would be open to a wholesale arrangement with your shop.
The yearly Seattle bike swap was yesterday. I got some white hudz new in package for $5 going on my new road bike (which I should have by March), some FREE brand spankin' new WTB tires for my mt. bike, a HUGE bell for my sisters bike, oh yeah and a new in box $250 Bontrager carbon cx fork for $50! What a good day. My cx bike is now complete. Bike swaps are the best place to find what you want/need at a great discount. Tons of 'cross stuff.
Anyone know of master list for Clydesdale races-road/cyclocross/mountain bike? I tried bikereg. & USA Cycling with mixed results. Seems all the Clydesdales orgs that started 80's-90's are defunct. Anyone have any luck?
As far as I know there are no C'dales only series. Some of the local MTN. Bike racing series add it to the card as a race catagory. However there is not a clydesdale cat. on the local cross series...PDX is only three hours though!
Just curious coming from a country that doesn't 'do' Clydesdales/Athenas but a country which has apparently just for fatter than the US (yes I'm talking Australia). What is the official 'definition of c'dale/athena??
Clydesdale is defined as being over 205 or 210 pounds. don't know what a weight would be for Athenas. I'm sure there is more that could be added but this is the basic rule.
"Cyclocross gladiators weighing 200 pounds (1.428 Contadors) or more, and Athenas, female gladiators weighing 160 pounds (1.142 Contadors), or more, are eligible to enter the ring of battle."...As outlined at the first ever Clydesdale Cyclocross Champion of the Universein Bend OR, 2009.
all good in so cal... first two races of the year have had massive turnouts and huge fields....over 70 lined up for my 35/45+ masters race last week... cat 4's even more... we may not have mud but we have everything else... races almost every weekend until january...
My 4 CX race of the season, finished on the lead lap! The course was peanut butter muddy earlier in the morning but by the time I started the sun was sort of poking out and the course dried out. It was a really wide open course, not technical at all but a slogfest through the wet grassy sections. If anyone asks, the Clement PDXcyclocross tires are the amazing! I was carving the turns and crazy off camber sections with 100% confidence that they would hold their line, these tires have the bigman seal of approval!!!
New light Clyde here (190--200 ish). only one season under my belt, but I'll vouch for the Clement PDX's too! Served me wonderfully in slop, dry, and technical!
anyone race yet? did my first race of the season (3rd ever) this past saturday. it was a comedy of errors. hit the deck a few times. got poison oak like you wouldn't believe. still had fun. finished 9/14 in C. next race is this saturday.
Way to go, that's how it should be...Top 10 finish! I'm blown away that there were only 14 in your C race plenty of room to race. As for me my first race, tentatively is coming up this Sunday. It's been a busy month so far...
ran to a 5th place finish in this past weekends race. broke my rear der in half and got the pulleys stuck in the wheel. clyde power! shouldered it the last half of the last lap. new rear der en route, picking up new der hangers today from Santa Cruz MTB...gonna take the 105 rear der off my roubaix to fix the CX in the interim.
surely you fatties are racing too? how's it going? in one local series, i've finished 9th, 5th, 4th and 3rd this past weekend. i think i'm in 2nd or 3rd in the overall points for my class. racing the bay area super prestige this weekend which will surely be the largest field i've raced in. the cap is 100.
Well about that...Not yet BUT I am doing a clinic next Wed and racing tentatively the 27th...I have a suitcase full of excuses sadly. Sounds like you have had a pretty successful season so far...
OK! I "raced" today and man was it MUDDY! I have never did a mud race and it was pretty fun, in a stressful kind of way. Did really good at staying relaxed and powering through the glop. I was hanging with another slow dude when, BAM! I hit the deck, those course stakes are really pounded in the ground...anyway after that I was pretty well on my own the whole rest of the race. Don't know where I finished but I finished, which is always on top of my checklist.
nice work Jesse! this upcoming weekend is a rare off weekend. each weekend afterwards is booked w/ races until Xmas. i took 6/65 in BASP#2 and 4/42 at Surf City #1. The course was the hardest CX course i've ever raced. 2 substantial runups...one of which was preceded by 4 barriers going up a hill. Plenty of sand and loose stuff and a few really hard uphill sections. i think the course had about 190 ft of climbing per lap. Found out that the Surf City CX series is the longest running series in the country. pretty cool!
Raced Orchard Cross Masters 45+ 3/4 on sunday and placed 20th. Best result so far in my short time racing cross. Even beat about a dozen Masters 35+ who started a minute in front of us. Results are improving each race.
off season will consist of riding trails as much as possible before it gets dusty, usually June. then start gearing up for the season on the road and CX bikes. i'm moving up to Cat B so I have a lot of work to do.
I am on week 3 of an 8 week plan to be able to run 30 minutes non stop, with hopes of being able to do a 5K non stop in april. I just got a bike fit today on my road bike so I am going to start ramping up the road riding...
Strava..absolutely. I have a Garmin 800 so I can upload directly. I also track my workouts on TrainingPeaks.
"Off Season", what is that? Here in New Hampshire the winters are long so during the week it is on the trainer and treadmill. Weekends out on the road unless ice or snow covered. As far as trying work towards running a 5K, checkout the book 'Run less, run faster". Same concept as "Time Crunched Cyclist".
Jesse, I find Strava is mostly a motivational tool... I like your running goal. What really helped me is to do interval research on running websites. I was able to pick up about 1m/mile over the winter doing this. I stick to the local HS track so I can do more structured workouts. I will mix it up between "running effeciency" @ the track and a few road runs. For Example:
Warmup: Skipping, Bear Crawl, Stork Walk, Lunge walk, Inchworm, walk backwards, latteral shuffle (look these up on youtube if you don't know them)
Workout: 3 - 100 yard striding (focus on form), 3 - 300 (3/4 lap) yard at slightly above comfortable, 3 - 800 (2 laps) yard at slightly above cofortable ... You should be gassed when you get done. You're trying to train your body to opperate and recover at a higher level.
*** Walk backwards for about 100 yards minute between each set. You should be slighty gassed when starting your next set.

LOL. Even at my good race weight (Which I'm not at the moment!) I'm still 'Athena'.
So that's 75kg for women, 91kg for men for those metrics out there!
