Hill climbing gearing?

Started this discussion. Last reply by Jon Paul Mar 9, 2015. 2 Replies

I recently got a Giant cx bike, and I'm having a ton of fun on it. It has a 12-28 (shimano 105) cog set, and 36 26 chainrings. While I hope to race, I am riding this bike for fitness. Along with mtb…Continue

I know this is a common question, so here are some specifics. I live in Lake Tahoe and ride a mountain bike. A long time ago I was an Ironman triathlete. I am 46, in decent shape and hope to get in…Continue

"Thanks Kris. I'm sure you're correct about the chainrings. I will probably start with the 12-32 and see how that goes. i live in the mountains, so i climb on every ride. I just want to start doing some notoriously steep road climbs as part…"

"You sure those chainring numbers are accurate?  Typically CX bikes come with a 46/36. Only way you are getting a 26 on the front is if you have a MTN double crank.  It would also give you less than a 1:1 ratio as your lowest gear…"

Hill climbing gearing?

I recently got a Giant cx bike, and I'm having a ton of fun on it. It has a 12-28 (shimano 105) cog set, and 36 26 chainrings. While I hope to race, I am riding this bike for fitness. Along with mtb trails here in Lake Tahoe, I also want to add some long road climbs to get strong (and I like it). I just met my match on a climb called Gates Canyon. I was told the grade is over 20%. I want gearing to enable my to ride the whole thing. What cogs can I set up on this bike? Thanks!JonSee More

"Kris and Kenneth, Your input was helpful. I ended up getting a 2015 Giant TCX Slr 2 in the Medium size. I found it used on Craigslist from someone that works in a shop for a good price, and only an hour from home. I may need to play with the stem…"

sizing of a Giant Bike

Hello,I am hoping to go look at a bike I found on Craigslist. I live very far away from any shops that carry cx bikes, so I ned to go this route. While traveling I had found LBS with a Giant bike in size large. I tried it out, and the helpful who manager said it looked big. No stand over at all. He said the ML size would not be much different, and that a Medium should work, but they had none coming. I am 5'10" with a 32 inch inseam. Has anyone dealt with Giant that might know if this sounds…See More

"Thank very much for the added input Kenneth! I'm going to attempt to be patient in my search. I wish I could test ride a few bikes, but that's the price of living in the mountains."

"I agree with everything Kris says about bike fit.  Once the CX season comes to a close (December), that's a good time to find a used bike.  I wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger on a 105 group, or SRAM Apex, as Cross is…"

"105 is MORE than serviceable as a groupset.  Having any group set-up and tuned properly is what is paramount in all cases. As for fit, do you know the rest of the geometry on your "56cm road frame"?  That is important.  If…"

Newby choosing a bike

I know this is a common question, so here are some specifics. I live in Lake Tahoe and ride a mountain bike. A long time ago I was an Ironman triathlete. I am 46, in decent shape and hope to get in very good shape again. Cyclocross just caught my eye and I think it would be a lot of fun. I will ride mostly for fitness, longer rides on fire roads, some single track, etc. I'd love to do some racing for fun, camaraderie, and to push myself. I have ridden high enough quality gear on the road that I…See More
