About Me:
I grew up mountain biking in San Diego and then moved to Chicago (the flat midwest) for college in 2003. I wanted to keep cycling, so I bought a mountain bike, figuring I'd be doing a lot of urban assault. Sure enough, the bike held up find on the gritty, dilapidated Chicago streets, bombing off curbs and down stairs. After I got my bachelors degree in May 2007, a friend and I attempted a 180 mile bike ride to Indianapolis. We made it 111 miles before I collapsed, exhausted. 111 miles on a 35 lb dual suspension mountain bike with a 10 lb seatpost rack load is not the best way to travel long distances. I realized that I needed a lighter, faster bike. In January 2008, I bought my first road bike and the next day did a century on it. Then I did some of the collegiate road racing season. Over the 2008 summer, I rode from Chicago to Colorado, an 1150 mile trip that took 13 days. It was a grand adventure, but riding through the high desert in the middle of summer is an awful experience. In the fall of 2008, I bought a cheap fixed gear bike to use as a commuter/winter beater. It's simple and fun. I also raced cyclocross for the first time in the fall, competing in the Chicago Cyclocross Cup on that 35 lb beast of a bike. Even with my bike, I was consistently able to beat more than half the field. I quickly came to the conclusion that by next season, I'd have a veritable CX bike and stomp the competition. For the 2009 season, I'll be doing some more collegiate road racing, riding with the 3 Rivers Velo Sport Club in Fort Wayne, and haven't decided on the ChiCrossCup or the OVCX series.
