Learning to cycle at the age of 20 was a very latent decision on my part but I’m still glad I did it because now I have the get-out-of-jogging-free card. I no longer need to put on my most comfy pair of running shoes just to access the best places in Singapore to catch a sunset.

From the heart of the city to the most ulu recesses of the Singaporean jungle, you can enjoy Singapore’s best sights - architecture and nature - within the small span of 719.1 square metres that is well-connected with various cycling trails.

We equipped ourselves with bicycles from FootLoops, bottles of water to keep hydrated, and a sense of direction to get through both the well-paved streets and uneven, gravelled tracks to enjoy these scenic cycling trails.

1. Bask in European feels @ Civic District

The only sign that will tell you that you’re still in Singapore is the weather but other than that, the Civic District is where you will feel as though you’ve been transported halfway across the globe - to Europe.

Whizz through the streets, passing by colonial-styled buildings like the National Gallery, Victoria Concert Hall And Theatre, and Asian Civilisations Museum. These landmarks are juxtaposed against the background of towering buildings that make up modern Singapore’s iconic skyline.

Casual cyclists who have difficulty navigating roads flowing with traffic can head towards the zen riverside route to escape the hustle and bustle.

If you’ve seen TSL’s Civic District Instawalk, the places we visited are not only pedestrian-friendly but also cyclist-friendly. Convenient parking spaces for bicycles are found around the must-visit places. So if you need a short potty break and bathe yourself with some cold air from the air-conditioning, you can just park outside and head right in.

2. Have a picnic at Singapore’s very own "Central Park" @ AMK-Bishan Park

Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park is the perfect balance of man-made installations and nature. This urban park is found in the heart of an estate surrounded by HDBs and condominiums, and is rich with a myriad of flora and fauna. It’s just like New York’s Central Park, but with a nice Singaporean touch to it.

With wide cycling tracks, you can slowly enjoy the river coursing through the park, without having to worry about holding up human traffic. These tracks are also connected by bridges over the river and stopping by on any one of them will give you a breathtaking view of the entire park.

After a long day of cycling in this scenic park, a picnic would be timely. For the best picnic spot, dismount from your bike and head to the wooden platforms overlooking the riverbank. We might not have a zoo like in Central Park, but if you’re lucky you might be able to spot some of the resident otters playing in the water.

IMO, if you plan to run tubeless tires, check 'em good. In my experience. a 35 mm sidewall-listed tire will puff out to 35-40 mm, depending on the particular tire and rim configuration. So...in order to run tubeless, I guess I'll need to buy 33's and hope they don't puff to beyond 35.

I find this to be pretty maddening and, hopefully, USAC can find a way to constructively consider tech development when writing/revising the rules.

Hey, All!

I've been working on a blog. I'm a Clydesdale, and today I vented, because "She" ruined my ride. I think you've all had a "She", or a "He" or a "Whatever," so I think you can relate.

Sometimes, you just need to scream.

So, check it out. I hope you enjoy, and I thank you for your time!

I would even consider a used pair in very good condition. I weigh a lot, thus the need for 32 holes.

Unidirectional carbon fabric is a reinforcement where all (or almost all) of the carbon fibers are aligned in the same direction. The only thing holding the fibers together will be occasional strands of either carbon or polyester running across the fibers at 90 degrees. Most of us know unidirectional material is used in applications where all of the forces on a part will be in one direction (such as the body of an archery bow). Alternate layers of unidirectional fibers can be positioned with different orientation to allow any combination of bias for the strength of the part to be achieved.

However, getting started can feel a little intimidating, especially if you’re completely new to the activity. Before getting out there, it’s a good idea to make sure that you’ve got everything you need to get the most out of your biking experience.

Bike Accessories: What do you need to start mountain biking?

The exact nature of what you need depends largely upon the level you wish to get into it. If you’re mainly looking to enjoy the odd weekend ride with the family, you won’t actually need too much in the way of bike accessories; though of course, safety equipment such as a helmet is vital.

However, if you’re looking to take the bike out on more adventurous terrain, you’ll need to think about investing in the following equipment.

Protection. This is one of the most important things to invest your money on. It’s important to remember that you’ll be travelling at speed, and if you’re unlucky enough to fall off, you don’t want to cause yourself serious damage. A helmet is imperative, and you may also want to buy some protective glasses, gloves and kneepads.

Cycling jerseys UK. Whilst you can get away with wearing basic sportswear when cycling, it does detract from the experience somewhat. At the very least, it’s a good idea to purchase a proper cycling jersey, especially in the winter. You may also want to invest in some suitable cycling trousers.

Tyres. Tyres come in all types and sizes, and are suited for different terrain. If you’re mostly cycling in urban areas, you may want some road tyres for your hybrid bike. If you’re planning to go out in the country, you’ll want tyres that are more suitable for that type of landscape. If you’re unsure, talk to an expert.

If you’re planning to get into mountain biking seriously, invest in some proper cycling MTB shoes or boots, which are ergonomically shaped to sit well on the pedal, whilst offering better levels of comfort and support.

I've always enjoyed taking the time to clean the bike after an event. This gives you an intimate and up close look at what the bike is experiencing in terms of wear and tear. Failure to do this, could hand you a DNF, the next time you pin on a number.

The month of August is typically when I build back up the cyclocross bike. Yes, I strip the parts off it and put them on a road bike during the non-CX race season. It may seem mindless to take on this sort of task but I use this time to replace the cables and house, service the shifters, install new bar tape, service the bottom bracket and headset bearings, pedal bearings, and wax the frame before use.

I'm going to briefly cover a small piece of this season's 'cross bike build up; mainly the brakes.

Shimano offers replacement cartridge style pads for their D-A/Ult/105 brakes with extra meat on them. By that I mean that you can get OEM pads that have an extra 1mm of pad material. R55C+1 is the part number.

I went with these pads knowing that I'd typically burn through a set of them on the 'cross bike after a combination of races, training rides, and winter riding during the wet days. 1mm extra pad material buys me a little time.

The installation was pretty straight forward for the R55C+1 pads. The FSA SL-K pad holders will accept Shimano pads but the fit was tight during installation. I ended up spraying denatured alcohol on the new pads and using channel locks to influence them into the FSA pad holders.

On a whim, I broke out the Park Tool BT-2 brake tool to set the straddle cable height. Speaking of cables... if you want the best shifting set up for your equipped bike- use the Campagnolo Ergo kit. What I did this year- Campy cables and Shimano SP41 housing. The front shifting on my 'cross bike is so good thanks to their high quality and polished cables, any SRAM-hater will give a nod to it's snickety quick upshifts.

Remember to always toe in your brake pads. Visit my past post on the easy how-to.

Now three quarters of the way through cyclocross race season and I've noticed that my bike is not exhibiting any fork chatter. Is this because of the new pads? Thicker is better? It's hard to say but the braking still feels smooth and linear as always.

Best of legs and lungs between the tape!

Obviously we're not 'pros' or 'professional bicycle racers'. What we're actually doing is making fun of the fact that every time we ride our road bikes, some of us spent ten minutes to put on the gear. The end result looking like some sort of neon-techno, leg shaven, lycra logo'd monkey of sorts. Yep, I'll poke fun at the absurdity seeing that someone once said that if you have to take more than five minutes to get ready to ride your bicycle, you're doing it wrong-- sounds true me. But dammit, I can really appreciate a nice pair of bib shorts. Anywho...

Cyclocross races are occupying most of my weekends from mid-September until mid December. This time of the year is crunch time with my job as we hustle to get new product out to our dealers. Combine that and being a full time daddy, husband and squeezing in some training for the weekend 'cross races leaves little time to exhale, soft pedal or regain your sanity. Except for this week.

I took advantage of a window of time this week to put in some miles with a local cyclist I really admire this season. Growing up, he's been all over the map with the sports he's participated in. As of the past few years, cycling has been a constant in his life. Much of which this past year and half he has made great gains as a contender at the local road races. So with that in mind, I'm going to chase him whenever possible to whip my tail into shape.

On my ride over to meet him at his place, I passed by a museum/ tourist area that has a short bike path spanning the length of the property called Hands on House and the Landis Valley Museum. Many times in the summer when I'm running behind schedule for a ride out that way, I keep to the main roads. As of late with the cooler weather, I've been deciding to hop on the bike path. Hardly anyone is ever on it. You still need to exhibit a level of a caution as to not scare or clip the occasional dog walkers on the path. I was halfway down the path this week when the thought occurred to me, we need more trails and paths. Better yet, we need more people using the ones we have.

This path is named the Manheim Township Bike Path and where it spans, there are many bike rides that leave that parking lot throughout the year. Why take the bike path? Because it needs to be come a Strava segment? No man. Because riding a bicycle, looking like a logo monkey, doesn't always necessitate drilling in Zone 5. Pardon the air of righteousness now, but sometimes we forget what got us into riding in the first place-- fun, friends and transportation.

Now I'm going to rewind back to last month. I had a scheduling change which opened up a Saturday for me. I received a message on Facebook from a friend who was riding from eastern PA to DC for breast cancer awareness on that Saturday and she wanted to know if I could hop on for a day ride since they were coming through my area. Now that my Saturday was open, I was in and not missing it.

The group of cyclists for this ride met in Lancaster city at the Marriott hotel. I cruised over for the social paced ride with bottles and food stuffed in all my pockets and a 10 spot for that food refill for the ride home. Excited to see some old faces and also to just get out for a ride, I told myself that day would be a century ride for me. Sure why not. And it ended up being a 100 miler when it was all said and done.

On the return trip riding eastward, I expected there to be a tail wind. I was wrong. The wind was coming out of the northeast, almost a headwind for the 50 miles back home. At one point, my route traveled across a road section where traffic was ridiculously heavy; some of which had highway traffic merging onto the roads leading to my intersection- RT30/ RT460. I turned south onto RT 616, then made a quick left to head east down Woodberry Road. This is a piece of the old Monday Night Ride we used to do back in my bicycle retail days. I hadn't been on the route in over 6 year and yes I started the trip down memory lane feeling sentimental and willing to trade riding flat, windy roads for hilly, less windy ones.

The route I followed passed by Indian Rock Dam Elementary School, back to the York College area where I stopped at the Rutter's Farm Store to grab a bottle fill-up and a banana. From there I cut through the York College grounds and kept true to staying out of the winds by hopping on the York County Heritage Rail Trail.

This was a century ride based on base mile pace and pointing my wheel towards the rail trail filled me with a sense of entitlement where we riders need to take the time to frequent local paths and trails. The point being, trails such as this are constructed with funding which many towns seldom have the money to utilize. The least we could do is to step foot on them from time to time so the city planners see the project wasn't a wasted effort.
The two paths I speak of in this entry offered a great change of scenery. Sometimes staring at the paint on the road, looking to avoid tire puncturing debris and whizzing vehicles can be mind numbing at times. The paths provided a moment of mental relaxation.

I still love my lycra, no there won't be a Strava segment on the Rail Trail and yes you should take the time to stop and watch the leaves change color via bicycle even if it seems like you're not- 'Keepin' it pro.'Spring Cleaningtag:cowbell.cxmagazine.com,2014-05-12:1198434:BlogPost:1541052014-05-12T13:22:01.000Zjon phillipshttps://cowbell.cxmagazine.com/profile/jonphillips

In the spirit of reusing/reducing/recycling, as well as making sure that my "Bridge of Sighs" flyover continues in 'cross, I am trying to find a buyer for the flyover that I have utilized in my Psycho Cross races, for the past four years. I cannot use the same venue to hold a race in the future, and have no place to store this Tudor-Style bridge.

The flyover has challenged and entertained Chicago Cyclocross Cup racers since 2010. Since I will not be using the same venue and have no way to store this beast, I am hoping, as strange as this may be, to sell this flyover to some promoter or team, who will have both the means to purchase, move, and reassemble it, as well as a place to store it. It would be a shame to commit this to the chainsaws. This is a serious quest and I will entertain serious offers and am flexible in my asking. I probably have upwards of $5,000-$6,000.00 into this flyover. When assembled, it measures 26' tall x 52' long, and 11' wide. USA Cycling has never had any issues with it in terms of stability or measurements. No one has ever - to my knowledge - sustained any injuries while climbing, riding over, or under this flyover. If interested, please contact me via this forum.

SoCal people: I’m looking for host housing for Bonelli-Fontana weekends for 4 people (3/13-3/24)… We are charming (they are well-mannered Canadians and I am fairly nice and have started to say "eh" at the end of things, so kind of count) and very easy to have around the house. Like quiet housepets that use the shower and toilet and fridge. (We can split up into 2 groups/jump from place to place if necessary.) Will provide beer, snacks and excellent conversation. Shoot me a message if you…
