Carbon soled shoes for CX?

I've used nylon soled Mavic shoe for the last two years of CX and have had great luck with them.  I find them comfortable, and especially easy to run in.  That said, these shoes were cheap and are falling apart, so I was going to invest in something new.  I use carbon soled shoes for my mtb and road bike and love the efficiency that carbon can provide.  I guess I'm just nervous about running in varying terrain with ultra-stiff shoes.  What do most of you think about carbon soles for CX?  Thanks… Continue

My unofficial start of the CX season

Road racing season is slowly coming to the end.  What a better way to start CX than to set myself up with a new 2012 Ridley X-Fire!  This machine will be updated with SRAM Force/Rival gruppo and converted to a single 42T ring.  Deeper profile mud swimming tubies will follow.  Stay tuned for pictures.

A frame a frame my kingdom for a frame

So the hunt is on for my new CX frame. I've ridden for the past few season on a too small for me orbea and I'm sucking it up  getting something that fits well and help me improve my handling.

I'm thinking a low BB frame seems like a good idea given my penchant for slow turns and questionable technical skills.

The local shop carries Redline, Trek/GF and Scott.

Anyone have an idea, Bueller?

Loss of Mojo

I know it ain't a CX bike, but so effing what? Most people around here seem to know what a mountain bike is. I drooled over a number of CX rigs during my SF vacation and I will talk about that in the not too distant future. Finish reading this, go ride and disseminate chaos.

Dr. Evil: Mojo: "The libido. The life force. The essence. The right stuff. What the French call a certain... I don't know what. "

Just go for a ride

I'm just a noob to this sport but it seems that everyone who posts complaints about being in the off season needs to Man up and just go for a ride. This doesn't have to be just a winter sport. In addition no one just comments about simply being out in nature and enjoying the beauty of their surroundings. This sport doesn't have to be about who come in first place.

CX withdrawls

So it's May and October seems an awful long way off.  My bike is nearly completely disassembled in the shop.  The bare frame and fork are sitting there on the stand.  I don't know what to do.

I think I made need to go  sniff the new griffos or fangos in the basement.

Maybe I need to buy a new frame.

Anyone have a training plan?

Maybe I need to get serious about buying my tubular wheels.

How do I stop the shakes or…

Rival vs Apex

What are the main differences between these two?  I am looking at 2 bikes and one has the Apex group and one has the Rival and both are within 50 bucks of each other.   Would I notice the difference between the two groups?

Mechanical versus Hydraulic Disc Brakes for CX

Can someone explain the benefits of hydraulics disc brakes over mechanical for cyclocross bikes?  Seems like all the recent innovation is in hydraulic disc brake adapters.  Are mechanical brakes deficient?  stopping power, weight, maintenance, etc..

The Offy/Acceptance

The offseason. It's officially here. I don't want to....but I have to accept it. The last race this past Sunday was a true nail biter. For the first time in years, one of the three major series was up for grabs on the last day of the series. Sven Nys' experience and ability to handle pressure saw him come out on top of the young challenger in Kevin Pauwels. Ya, there's one more race tomorrow, but thats really just more of a parade than anything else.

After reading the…

Review: Fox Antifreeze Gloves

Fox Antifreeze Gloves

MSRP: $49.95

Sizes: SM(8), MD(9), LG(10), XL(11)

I'll be right up front and tell you; I'm not a big fan of winter gloves. They're often thick and bulky, leading to a disconnected feel when braking or shifting using the componentry found on most modern machines. However, left with the option of racking the bike for five months per year, or donning the walrus mits for a cold-weather spin, I'll…

My Second Cyclocross Race

I wore my Garmin during today's race and put the track into EveryTrail.
Here's a link, hope it works:

I was seriously beaten down again but I had a great time. Super workout too, my HR was around 167 for quite a while.
Thanks to the coordinators, it was a blast. Not sure if I can make next weekend but…

Shoot out at the Not-So-OK Corral! OR; Fun, Frivolity, Frothy beverages and Falling down

Last week we posted the challenge for Halloween -- make a donation to the Wounded Warrior Project and you get to vote on what costume I wear to race my bike in. The grand winner is . . . the 187s! Chief 187 picked me to dress up as a old-west Marshall, perhaps Wyatt Earp. Well, you asked for it:…

Grog talks about bicycle racing

Grog is my inner caveman. Or alternate personality. Or part of my sadly delusional failing mind. Take your pick. But now that we are back in town, I thought it best to let Grog talk:

Grog like bicycles. He go lots of places on bikes. Grog sometimes go for faraway rides. Grog sometimes ride in circles. Grog gets grumpy if Grog no ride for several days. Grog not know why. Just is.

Grog likes racing cyclocross. Grog think it a good excuse to play in dirt like he 7 years old… Continue
