race report: cross crusade 2011/PIR-Pro Paddock

Today was my last race of the year. It was a very good way to end my season.

The rains of yesterday delivered the mud we'd waited for all season. It wasn'y especially wet or gloppy, and I didn't get a whole ton of it on me or my bike; but it was thick and deep enough in spots to slow everyone down and force many off their bikes on runups most could've ridden in dry weather and so it was good enough.

The course was a modified -- some said watered down -- version of the USGP…

No more a beginner

I  came in to season thinking I would do a couple races. I think I did 12. This might be the best or the worst sport ever, could be both. I've realized despite my 36 years of age and 0 years of bicycle racing, I still want to search and destroy! Racing C's next weekend. Thank you Metropolis Cycle Repair for having me. CX is a puzzle I will crack.

cross crusade 11-6-11: barton park

I skipped this race last year due to a scheduling conflict. I was bummed because it had poured all day and there was tons of beautiful, gloppy mud. Oregon Public Broadcasting had sent out a film crew and shot a video of the race for a story on Oregon Field Guide. It had been an epic day of Oregon cyclocross, and I had missed it. I was determined not to miss Barton again.

What went wrong:

1. The weather. It… Continue

HELP! Tecnique and tire traction

Johnny Newb here and having a tough time washing front wheel out in muddy corners - more trouble than the other newbs. I realize that this is a technique problem, BUT what tire can I use in the front to help the cause. I spend each race passing several riders in staight sections only to watch them pass me as I am re-mounting after going down, over and over again.

I am trying to slow up heading into the corner with excels coming out, pedaling threw the corner as much as possible,…

race report: cross crusade 2011/hillsboro

Another week of dry weather meant another Cross Crusade course that was flat, dry and fast. I was not excited as the MAX train pulled into the Washington County Fairgrounds station. I signed in, caught up with the fellas from Crank, and eventually parked my stuff. I walked the course to check it out. Most of it would be deadly dull for my little singlespeed bike and painful for my slow little legs; a few switchbacks near the barns and a decision by race organizers NOT to bring back the six-pack… Continue

Rookie getting rooked

Rode DCCX today: my first CX race AND first competitive cycling event all at once. I cannot believe my good fortune in starting out on this race. Yes, I bit it a couple of times... all remounts. There were only a few dead-leg moments.

My undying gratitude is owed to the couple who shouted for me to come closer to the right side tape riding one descent into some mud, as that was the only spot that hadn't been rutted axle deep by the 4:15 start!

I am going to…

From trying not to lose to trying to win

I never thought I would Race a bicycle. I'm glad I did. This was my 7th race, got 7th place. I hope those numbers don't start a trend, 102'd race 102'd place, that won't work for me. My old fighting spirt is coming back, and I love it.

race report: cross crusade 2011/PIR-Heron Lakes

The day dawned cool, almost crisp, and cloudy. I enjoyed a nice ride down to the venue from my house. By the time I'd gotten to PIR at around 10:15 am, the clouds were breaking up a little. By noon the sun had broken through and I no longer needed my long-sleeved base layer; I swapped in a lighter sleeveless layer instead. The course was mostly dry, with long stretches of gravel and pavement that I didn't remember from last year. What mud there was was dry and tacky. In short, this was a…

FMB sidewall gummy

After a month my new FMB's have a gummy/sticky sidewall. I only use a mild soap to wash my bike. How do I get this stuff off so I can recoat it with a better sealant?

I know I am not the only one with this issue, at this point I would just like to know how to safely remove the origianl stuff?

For Sale: 56cm Slingshot DD-x Frameset

I'm selling a very lightly used 2010 Slingshot DD-x frameset, $800 obo. The frameset includes a 5 degree sweep Ritchey WCS carbon cx fork and Cane Creek IS-8 headset. The bike was built up for last cx season but is about 5cm too tall for me. I judged sizing incorrectly, unfortunately, based on VTT, not stack and reach.

The frame has an Aluminum alloy main triangle bonded to a carbon rear triangle, it is extremely light, stiff, and responsive, yet comfortable enough to enjoy…
