I've used nylon soled Mavic shoe for the last two years of CX and have had great luck with them.  I find them comfortable, and especially easy to run in.  That said, these shoes were cheap and are falling apart, so I was going to invest in something new.  I use carbon soled shoes for my mtb and road bike and love the efficiency that carbon can provide.  I guess I'm just nervous about running in varying terrain with ultra-stiff shoes.  What do most of you think about carbon soles for CX?  Thanks in advance!

I was with you on not using carbon sole but I bought some Specialized MTB Pro with carbon sole and they felt great.  Had a real comfortable feel on run-ups and energy transfer was way better then I expected.  I am still frustrated with all the dirt that comes in the vent holes, especially in the sand boxes.

Sounds like a ton of people love Specialized shoes.  They generally are too narrow for me, but I know they make a great shoe.  I just received a nice, wide Louis Garneau shoe (the mtb equivalent of my road shoes) and they fit like a charm.  I totally agree with your "wattage nerd" comment... I have noticed more efficiency with carbon soled road and mountain bike shoes.  Just leary about CX, but I'm gonna give them a try!!!  Thanks for sharing your opinion!

I have the Specialized Pro MTB. These are my "Sunday Best" shoes but the stiffness is a welcome change from the Comp version I wear for training.  I'm no wattage nerd but you can feel more energy going to the cranks instead of into a flexing sole.  They they run/climb great, come with toe spikes and a snazzy shoe bag.

David, i went to carbon soled shoes for CX two years ago. I was experiencing pain in my feet from the over extension of the toe joints when running up a steep run-up (Glouster). The stiff carbon soles alleviated that. A LBS recommended Specialized MTB carbon soled shoes because they have a slight rocker shape that allows for walking (and running too!)

Good to know that carbon isn't a deal breaker for CX.  In discussion with some teammates, they're saying the same thing.  Sounds like it's a consensus!  Thanks for your input!

I have Sidi Dragons and Giro Codes. Both carbon soles and both fantastic for cross. Toe spikes are a plus with both shoes.
