Richard, try connecting with SoCalCross Prestige Series on Facebook. They are running clinics, training rides and all sorts of fun events with lots of chances to learn. They are the produces of the SoCal series and are super helpful and encouraging for new riders.
Richard, "looking like a dummy" is part of the fun. Stumbles and spills are part of the game. Get over it and go have some fun, if you are lucky, you'll get some good heckles from the crowd, that will be a sign you are doing it right. ;)
Ok Kris I will get out and do it. A little apprehensive about lookin like a dummy though...
There are likely local clinics put on by shops or teams that would help you understand the necessary skills. There are also a ton of online and hardcopy materials (including this Magazine) to help you. Really the best way to get it, in my opinion, is to go out there and do it. I learn something new every race, good, bad, or ugly.
