I'm on the 980's and they work really well. Like you, I had a pair of the Candy's (2011 model) and they were challenging to clip in and out of at times. The SPD's are the exact opposite of the Candy's and I'm amazed at how quickly I can get in and out of them. That being said, the SPD’s can gum up rather quickly and have transformed into platform peddles while riding in the heave NW mud, but in SOCAL you should be golden.
