After a 20+ year break from road racing, I'm thinking about trying a CX race this year. I'm not going out to win, just to have a good time and establish a baseline of my fitness level. If all works…Continue

One correction, I meant to write skipping the road racing scene (not the CX one).

Hi Todd,

Thank you for sharing!  Your training plan looks well thought out.  I just started with a cycling club this year.  They focus on the road side of things, but I figure it will get me in shape for Cyclocross.  So for now it is about 12 hours a week, mostly indoors due to the weather.  They have me going through traditional build and recovery phases. That  said, I’d like my main focus to be single speed cyclocross.  So I’ll stick with the club team this year (they’re kind of expensive) and more than likely train on my own next skipping the race scene.

I just purchased a Nature Boy Zona frameset.  It’s coming in late August, so I have a while before I begin SS specific training.  Sounds like you have lots of experience with racing in general.  That’s great.

So my goal is twofold.  First to actually finish a race!  Second, to do well with the ss bike in a non-single speed race.  I’m getting stronger, but I need to lose a few pounds.  I have this little voice in my head that says, if only you’d get down to 170…

When I have my ss, I’m hoping I can find a cog size that is just challenging enough to use on my rollers and my indoor trainer.  I’m already trying some drills to become more comfortable spinning at a high cadence.  Also, my handling is lacking.. I’ll really need to work on that aspect.  There is a bridge near me with a sharp turn.  I can’t even get around the sharp elevated bend without clipping out.  Oh well, guess it wouldn’t be worth it if there wasn’t something to work towards.

Ok, that’s my side of things.

Hi Todd, no word back yet on Singlespeed training.  I'm thinking it must be doable though even for resistence work on a trainer given the right gear.  And I'm thinking it would be a good thing to get used to spinning a high cadence if needed.  Have you given it some thought?
