Nathan,
Welcome to the forum and welcome to cyclocross. You're going to love it. You just can't go wrong with a cross bike. The best advice I ever got was at the first race I ever entered. A guy told me the only equipment option that really matters, within reason anyway, is the tires. Then I did my first race, got my butt royally kicked and have been crazy about cross ever since. You can't go wrong with any of the name brands out there. The main thing is to get on a bike and start practicing bike handling, dismounts and remounts, and enter a race. People at the races are great. They will drop you and leave you for dead on the race course but they will tell you exactly how they did it.
Since you asked, my personal bike choice is a Redline Conquest. It's the most bike for the money that I could find. I really don't need anything flashy because I put a rack and lights on it between races and commute with it during the week. In the off season I put fenders on it and 100+ mile joy rides are not a problem. If I had a nicer bike, I would be afraid to lock it up in front of store somewhere, which means I wouldn't ride as much, which would make me slower, so it all balances out anyway.
The main thing is to get a bike and start riding. You can always upgrade later, which is what you will do no matter what you buy.

Hope to see you at a Tailwind race some day. They are awesome and very beginner friendly.

About Me:
Just getting started but I have ridden my whole life including bmx, mountain bikes, short tours and commuting. I feel like I have always wanted a cross bike and that my only option was a mountain bike but after commuting mainly on the road I sold the bike and quit I hated riding it so much. I knew I could have just got smaller road tires but the bike was just too heavy.

I was determined to find a bike that did everything I wanted it to. I went to every LBS asking questions, they seemed confused until they said they had ordered a Tricross for someone and brought it out from the back. Immedietly I knew that a cross bike was for me. I have been researching ever since, waiting to get the best bike I can afford. I know, I know, who am I to join this forum with no racing expirence but by this time next year I will have just finish a long year of training and hopefully successful race season.

I plan on doing some light touring/ ultra light unassisted centuries as well unless my bike selection doesn't allow the addition of atleast a rear rack. Email with any ideas for a great cross racing bike that is verywell capable of commuting and touring. thanks
