Should I be thinking higher to cut through the mud to solid ground or lower to ride on top?

Any other hints from experienced riders?

Lower. You want more traction and lower pressure allows the casing to conform more.

What Chris said. You will be able to run much lower pressures than normal, too, because all of the ground is so soft making pinch flats a reduced likelihood and with said mud, speeds are much slower.

The race was Cross in the park in Buffalo, ny
Yeah the speed was ridiculously slow and had to run much of the course.
By the third lap had to stop and clear the rear wheel from the mud .
By the fourth my bike was a single speed.
There were over 30 DNF's from broken derailleurs
Wish I brought a second bike . I will next time!
