The links to Sheldon Browns (so sad to think he's no longer with us) site are good. Stu Thorne from Cyclocrossworld has a good simple article as well.

As for power, what are you making the comparison too? Other cantis? Or are you comparing them to road or MTB brakes?

Do you have the 2009 or 2010 version? I've got the 2010s which required careful setup with the stock pads in order to not suck. A set of replacement jagwire pro-lite pads from a member of this forum really really improved the stopping power.

I actually have a set of jagwire pads i'm going to try. i lowered the straddle carrier today and it helped. thanks for all the suggestions.

Set the straddle cable hanger up so that it's three fingers above the tire. Get some Kool Stop salmon pads. (file the lip off them) Adjust everything else accordingly.

Put on some old Jagwire pads i found in my toolbox. Much better.

My Avid 4's have been in use since 2001 and still do me fine. Just had the Kool Stop Salmon pads (Cartridge) mounted on the front per the recommendation of Ace Mechanic, Duanne, at Boulder Cycle Sport and with the proper toe in, no more freakin front brake chatter. Hallelujah!!
