I recently switched to Shimano XTR pedals and have been really happy with them.  Previously on Crank Bros., but had continuous problems with pedals breaking.

While racing yesterday, I came unclipped from my left pedal twice--once while sprinting at the start and once while pointing my left knee into a turn.  Both times it was when my heel twisted INWARD.  Using SH51 (black) cleats.  The Shimano Tech Doc says that these cleats should only release with OUTWARD movement of the heel.

Has anyone else had similar experiences?  Any suggestions?

Thanks!

The SH51 cleats will release inward. The tech doc is wrong.

I think you are thinking about the multi-release sh56 which release pulling up as well.

Just tighten the tension. I have mine set to about 3/4 full tension
