I really like my Kore Kross brakes. My Avid Shorties were more powerful in ideal conditions but the Kores are just better overall and amazingly adjustable. The race versions have more features and less weight than most brakes that cost twice as much or more.

 

For wheels I really love Mavics. I have Aksium clinchers and a set of older tubular Ksyriums. All have been absolutely wonderful wheels and I'm a clyde who is hard on his wheels.

Hi there,

I used a pair of Sugino 75 cranks, Chris King headset, the wheels are Kinlin XR200 rims built on to Phil Wood hubs, a 130mm being used for the rear.  I built my bike for reliability and there is no doubt you can get lighter hubs than Phil Wood but they would be up there with the best made cycling components around.  I have TRP cantilevers in alloy as I couldn't really see the value in the carbon or magnesium versions.  They work really well but being a first timer I developed a whole new range of swear words when trying to set them up initially.

Sram Rival aluminum cranks work great as ss cranks and accept 130 shimano chainring bolt pattern rings. Get a Chris King headset and bottom bracket and you will be set for years in cx. Avids shorties are good starter brakes. Surly cogs or Chris King stainless cogs are also lifetime parts. King stuff may seem to be Cat 1 build parts but they are made to last a long time.
