I'm going to be in town over long thanksgiving weekend and excited to do a cross race there (since we don't have any in chicago that weekend). I wondered if anyone will be out practicing that thursday or friday or saturday and I could join you? thanks!

Vets Park Video -

A rough-cut video of interviews from Saturday and some B and C racing from Sunday. Masters, SS and Elite later.

Sorry, no music, just race-sounds.

I have one bike set up with a double - was a 46/38, but now it's down to a 44/38, and the single ring is a 39 which seems to work even better. Ring choice, I think, depends on the course and the ground. At Lower Huron I was in the 46 start to finish. At Vet's the 39 was perfect and use of a 44 or 46 was limited. I'm still keeping the double set up for a while, but I dunno ... that single is running pretty sweet. Used it for practice last night and got liking it even more. This season has been wet, and looks to be getter wetter. It really has has become the year of the Church of the Little Ring. Or maybe I'm just getting older and weaker!

OK Rob, just got done with my 2(3x3min power intervals (2min RBI)] 6min RBS +45 min EM's. But no lights, slogging, or bunny hopping though. I think i'm one of the few who has spent almost as much on my trainer as I have on my latest bike. Now that it's getting cold AND dark, it's time for it to come out of clothes rack mode and back into full service. I'm sleeping at 5am though.

I've only raced three times, but I did my first race with a 48/36. The 48 was way too large, and the 36 felt better, but was still a bit much on the climbs.

I'm currently running 42/30 with 11-25 in the back and it seems to give me a lot of flexibility. Maybe when I'm stronger I'll think differently, but for now 42 seems to give me plenty of power when I need it, and the 30 is great for climbs. I really like having a big ring that I can use most of the time, with a granny gear to dump into when I think I'm going to die, which is more often than I'd like to admit.

Okay everybody,
That's it. That's enough. Why are you spending precious moments tap tapping away in this forum when you can be out there building those quads and hammies? I want to hear less chatter and more whining about how hard you trained 'till midnight last night with lights strapped to your helmets and bats flying by as you bunny hopped barriers and slogged mercilessly away; then you arose at 5am for another round of pain before work. C'mon, off the butts now.

Um, I'll wait here. I haven't finished my hot cocoa yet. The puffy marshmallows are particularly yummy.

The front ring/rings choice is often very personal and usually part of a secret recipe. I've raced 48/38 for years with few side effects, but realized that a 44 or a 42 big ring would be better. For you, though, 48 might work (if so, you're a monster). I could never think straight after a lap or so and it was better for me to stay in my 38 most of the time, spinning away.

I really think the front ring thing is very specific to each rider. Fun and easy thing to experiment with. It's just money, right?

My new Tricross Expert came with 34/48. Worthless for cyclocross, but great for trail rides and dirt roads.

For rear, I agree, 12/27.

Maybe I should qualify what I have written about my time in the big ring this season SweetChicken, it has been nearly nonexistant but I am trying:) The straight-away at lower huron tempted me to be at 36/12 for maybe 10 seconds per lap, as soon as I got back onto the grass you could hear me furiously click, click, clicking my way back down to Mr. Magoo gearing...

As far as Leo the Italian Greyhoud goes, he might not be big but he sure is fast if you have a treat in your hand! Maybe I could improve my running ability if I hung a pork chop from my belt and had him follow me on the trail? He isn't built for the cold though so I don't think he will be making an appearance at the Dec 6th race...

Ditto that, I've never been off my small ring in a race (38/46, 12-27) I built it with two not ever having ridden cx before and overestimating my horsepower. Judging where from where my cassette sees most of its action maybe even 36T wouldn't be unreasonable. You're an animal Paul, maybe it's from trying to outrun that ferocious dog of yours.
