oops, meant to say "why not add a bit of running and skiing"!

Hi. Found this site recently as I'm looking to try cyclocross this year. Watched a few last year and thought it looked like great fun, albeit grueling at times. Waiting for my Jake the Snake to arrive any day now..very excited. Time to hang up the tri bike and venture off road. So a couple of questions- looking for at least one riding partner/group within a half hour of the Greater Lansing area for cross rides during the week...any suggestions? Willing to travel further for rides on the weekend. Also, as I'm into the multisport mindset, I'm really interested in doing winter triathlons too- run/bike (usually MTB, but I don't know why one couldn't use a cross bike)/x-c ski....anybody heard of any in MI, or interested in trying to get this "up and running"? I've seen a snow cross race, so why add a bit of running and skiing? Looking forward to your comments and suggestions...and perhaps a hand to pull me out of the mudpit when I'm down! Thanks!

Cool thanks. Maybe I will pick up a set of clinchers. I have a set of tubular fangos and also grifos as my main tires. Well right now I have some tufo`s on but I am going to swap them for the grifo`s I think. Too many tires and not enough wheels is my problem. :)

I meant to say dedicate a "tubular" set to a file tread.

For winter riding - on icy roads - and we do a lot of it here on the West Side - file treads are excellent. When the gravel roads turn to glare it's time for at least a file (Jet) on the front. Also great for tracking in snow. But I'd have to have a lot of wheel sets to dedicate one to a file set ... maybe just a front. I just don't know if I could justify them for as many times as they'd pay off in race conditions.

Grifo XS...They're great for the early season dry course's..like in grass and sand is when they're at their best. The tubular version in 34mm are excellent on dry bumpy stuff, like Waterford. The clincher version is also excellent and has just a touch less air volume then the tubular version, but very hard to tell. Also they are good on Ice from what I've heard but I'd rather run a Fango for that type of condition because they have better side lugs for cornering. I'd recommend a Fango for a good first tire from Challenge, then go for the XS as a alternative when it's dry...

I've been toying with the idea of the file tread, heard they're great in icy conditions. I think Jeff Weinert just got some he would probably know best.
