I thought they were great, raced them hard the entire season and barely put them out of true. No damage to the rim other than a bit of brake wear. I got them with the crash replacement too, so I could be a little more reckless...

This season I think I'm just going to use aluminum box section rims though, I like the braking on them better

Tubulars, totally worth it. I look around for good deals on ebay for a bit older wheels when I can. This season I am going to pick up some mud tires finally.

Velocity Escapes laced onto whatever hubs you've got lying around and some Challenge Grifos. And whatever Cameron said.

Hey Paul,

I just built some up that had ultegra hubs and sun vista cruiser rims that I both got on ebay for super cheap. DT swiss champion spokes built up by a buddy of mine for a six pack. Total cost was around $150, light enough, wider tire bed for better glue contact.

Yes, tubulars make a huge difference as long as you are using the proper pressures and tires for the course. I bought some challenge tubies at the end of last season for super cheap, they may be a bit harder to find now. Ebay is always your friend!

Hi All,

I am toying with the idea of some bike upgrades for the upcoming cross season. My main question is about tubular tires/wheels, do they make a big enough difference to justify going tubular if I am thinking of getting new clinchers anyway? I was interested in something like the alloy Neuvation or Williams tubulars. Also if you have suggestions on hub/rim/spoke combos and having them built up locally that would be great too.

I am a working man with a tight budget for hobbies so I am thinking non-high end options that make sense but aren’t complete crap. Zipp 303s are obviously out of the question for me, but I want something that will last but will actually make a difference. I am currently racing on lower end clinchers at 1711 grams for the set so it shouldn’t be hard to find a good upgrade that will fit the bill.

I'm about 185 pounds if that makes a difference.

Also, any ideas on good tubular tires for the local SE Michigan races?

Nice article by Adam Meyerson on the new UCI regulations on this site today. It's funny when you think about it - the UCI adopted more mountain bike technology with disc brakes, but took away the bigger, mtb influenced tires. I'm going out to measure my tubs right now.

It will probably be a while before I get another cross bike, so no discs for me either any time soon.

Maybe my next bike will be a single speed with a belt drive and disc brakes with a bamboo frame?

I did win some 32's in a raffle after the last cross race last season. I will try them out even though Tailwind probably won't care what width my tires are.

I wonder is the rule changes will spur Robert to change up the courses at all next year? Maybe I should be practicing my bunny hops if they go with lower barriers:)

Discs would be nice in a race like the Louisville usgp last year. Seemed like the whole course was mud, then you hit the sand pits and you could just hear your rims being sanded away. But I am a purist (for now) and will be staying with my canti`s.
