We've got one covered in that crappy green outdoor put-put golf carpet. Haven't seen it with heavy mud, but have ridden it in a rainy race. A little slick. It's got a pretty good dirt layer in the carpet.

If I remember rightly, CityCross at Halifax, UK used scaffold planks covered with green matting (not sure what it was, but was too thick) with chicken wire nailed over the top for grip on the the up-side. Downside was just planks I think.

At cross crusade they looks like used heavy roofing felt or possibly roll roofing. They laid it long ways so you don't go over any seams. They had a 50 ft pavement section prior so most of the mud was off before hitting the flyover. It was pretty good traction and easy enough to get over. Plenty if the A racers were hitting pretty fast and getting 1-2 feet of air.

Roll roofing is pretty cheap and durable.
