Can you help me with my gear selection? I almost tore my leg off !

Hello everyone , this is my first year in cyclocross but not racing ( MTB). I have been experimenting with different gears ratios . Recently my bike came back from the bike shop and the mechanic installed a 10 cog road set on the back coupled with the two on the front crankset. It almost tore my leg off in the mud and climbing . I figure that there must be an easier combination to ride effectively on the grass and through the mud.
Any suggestions on how I can approach figuring out the right combination for my racing?

Agree, 11-22T is just stupid.
Sean, you must be a hammer. How can you push a 46T on anything but pavement in a CX race?
I agree 46/39 is fine. I don't think it's worth replacing the 39 with a 38 until it wears out.

It would be good to replace the cassette to get some lower gears though. I'd suggest a 12-27, 27 is likely to be the largest sprocket your rear mech can handle. You could check with your mechanic.

I'd see how you go with that set up before you make any other major changes.

Also, it's worth thinking if there are parts that maybe you could have run faster than you can ride, or how you're tackling climbs you're struggling with.

Cheers,
Steve
OK I just returned from the bike shop and decided to swap my rear cassette for a 12-27 . I am leaving the front rings and will be test riding it all tomorrow .
Thanks for the advise , very helpful on may fronts .
Wish me luck , I race again this weekend in New England .
