Who's had success with mounting tubeless tires on Ksyrium Elites? What tires have you used, and how have you dealt with the stem?

 

My mechanic says that with Ksyriums, you can just cut out a stem from an old tube and tighten it down with the mounting nut - you don't need the Stan's rimstrips or the $9 valvestems.

 

I tried this with my old set of WTB Cross Wolf 32's - and it didn't work out well. Got the front tire mounted and it held air all night, but it rolled off when I hit a slippery root on my first ride (had about ~ 30 psi).

 

Could never get the rear tire mounted (burned through a quart of Stan's trying).

I was using an air compressor, and soap suds.

 

Any tips for success with Ksyriums? I am looking at Hutchinson Bulldogs (carbon bead) - any body using those on Ksyriums?

yeah... i've run ksyrium elites tubeless for the last 2 years. mostly with hutchinsons. you can set them up without a rimstrip, but i wouldn't recommend it. (too much burping). haven't tried the new carbon bead hutchinston, but i'd be surprised if it completely fixes the burping. the rimstrips have definitely made them rock solid and are worth the extra hassle for me.

no tips or tricks. just like anything else, you get better at it (less messy) the more times you do it.
I've got 3 sets of wheels with Stans, and I use the Stans tape and Stans valves with removable cores. I have not tried the Ksyriums.
i would agree that the ksyrium rim that's sealed (no spoke holes) is one of the worst candidates for tubeless conversion. the rim is a little deep which requires some build up to create a tight seal, and that's via a lot of tape or a Stan's rim strip (as mentioned in part ii of our tubeless articles). You wrench is right in that it works okay for some for road tubeless with a dedicated road tubeless tire, but that's a high pressure system and requires a tight fit at the hook so that the tire does not blow off. a low pressure system requires a tight bead along the rim so that burps don't happen.

if you have a different wheelset, I'd honestly try that. my rule of thumb is if you can burp by hand at your desired tire pressure (lower than your typical clincher pressure I'd expect) than it's no good. I've never been able to pass that rule with ksyrium rims. trust me, I've had to run half a lap because I've still tried!

I totally agree with Andrew and Aron: the Ksyrium works as a road tubeless, but really needs a rimstrip to work well for tubeless for CX, and the rim channel may have to be built up with rim tape first. The side walls are too high and there's no real shoulder for the tire bead to sit on and seal up. The Bulldog is also not the best tubeless tire for a conversion, but maybe the new carbon beaded Bulldog is better? Andrew?
