I was wondering is there a real difference between the two tires as far as ride quality? At the moment I have Michelin Mud 2's and Jet tires.  Was thinking about the line of Challenge open tubulars…Continue

Started Aug 21, 2013 0 Replies

Up for grabs today is a pair of 2012 Bontrager RL mtb shoes in size 46 (13).  I bought these last year, mounted cleats and spun around the block with them.  They are just a hair too big for me.…Continue

Chris Mayhew replied to Aaron J's discussion Embro and temperature.
"I don't think it should be used for training, or at least not as a substitute for clothing. I use embro in training but mainly because I'm old and have joint issues. I don't know that I have a lower temperature barrier. I use non…"

Chris Jennings replied to Aaron J's discussion Embro and temperature.
"Mostly depends on how hard the planned ride is. Typically I start putting embro on in the low 60's and don't put knee warmers on until the very low 40's. if it's wet out i'll put embro on in the 70's. "

Aaron J replied to Edward Tuttle's discussion Calming the Nerves
"Do NOT listen to Slayer.  Trust me. All kidding aside, just have fun.  I have only done seven races since starting last year.  I still get butterflies leading up to the start.  Once the gun goes off, it all goes away.  The…"

Chad Rector replied to Aaron J's discussion Tire question. Challenge open tubulars & Michelin clinchers.
"Ditto on the A23 and major toms. Great sets of wheels. It's even easier now that I run discs though, just need rotors on all of the wheels."

Luke Landis replied to Aaron J's discussion Tire question. Challenge open tubulars & Michelin clinchers.
"Yea, I use the A23s, and the Major Toms. Works great when going back and forth. "

BSUdude replied to Aaron J's discussion Tire question. Challenge open tubulars & Michelin clinchers.
"One thing I would add is that if you're going to buy a new pair of wheels to use in conjunction with an existing wheelset, make sure the rim widths are compatible...I had hed belgium tubular rims (wide) and mavic ksyrium clinchers (narrow) and…"

Chad Rector replied to Aaron J's discussion Tire question. Challenge open tubulars & Michelin clinchers.
"This is also what I've done in the past, or to have the clinchers for a backup wheelset. This year will be my first year with two sets of tubulars but I'll probably still bring the clinchers along, though I'm dabbling with the idea of…"

BSUdude replied to Aaron J's discussion Tire question. Challenge open tubulars & Michelin clinchers.
"This is what I did last year and it worked great.  I had 1 set of dugast typhoon tubulars which was great (I live in Indiana too) since we only had a 2 or 3 really muddy races.  In the mud I ran clinchers (PDX front, Mud2 rear).  In…"

Luke Landis replied to Aaron J's discussion Tire question. Challenge open tubulars & Michelin clinchers.
"My 2c. Ran Muds 2s. Good tire in the grass(dry or wet), dirt, some mud. Fragile  Jet on the rear, for afternoon dry rides on grass, dirt. Fast, but Fragile. Both Michelin tires wear fast, but thats a byproduct of supple I guess. I have a pair…"

Chad Rector replied to Aaron J's discussion Tire question. Challenge open tubulars & Michelin clinchers.
"Going tubular is a pretty noticeable difference. Mud 2's are pretty good for clinchers, some think they're some of the best tires for most conditions. They ride like crap on pavement, in my experience. Used them to ride to a cx race that…"

BSUdude replied to Aaron J's discussion Tire question. Challenge open tubulars & Michelin clinchers.
"Not a big fan of the jet, but I've had success on the Mud2 in a variety of conditions.  Never used challenge tires, but "vastly better" seems like a stretch.  You could run a mud2 in pretty much any condition on the rear and…"

Chris Mayhew replied to Aaron J's discussion Tire question. Challenge open tubulars & Michelin clinchers.
"The Challenge is a vastly better tire. Wider casing and slightly more supple too. However the tread is pretty different, so I'm not sure what conditions you want to use this in. If you're looking for a dry tire get the Grifo. If…"
