Hey Mark, We get this question a lot at Echappe. The HED wheels are often called into question for their weight versus the performance benefits of the wider rim. We also have a good relationship with Challenge and have tried out a few combinations o…

Nice to see you're getting out on some sweetness! First off - ditch those Shorties. They suck. Cheap TRPs are the way to go. Wheels: 220lbs look into some 32h+ rims to start. In CX you're going to hear a lot about clincher vs. tubular vs. tubeless…

The Shimano wheels are probably your simplest set up for just getting some tubeless technology going. The 6700 wheels are an amazing deal from Shimano. Really nice, really solid design and great bearings. I'm racing a set on the USA Crit circuit thi…

Challenge is releasing a new Grifo next year called the Grifo Pro. This does not have the porous skinwall sides, but rubber like a Michelin Pro3. I will have them available now on special order or in stock closer to the CX season (august).

The most common issue I've seen this season here in New England and Mid-Atlantic is guys trying to shift for that extra gear beyond the 25/27/28/whatever-is-your-highest-gear-that-doesn't-really-exist. The derailleur built up with mud catches a spok…

I'm fairly biased here since I used to ride for the Van Dessel factory team, but the Country Road Bob is a super versatile bike for SS 'cross racing. Today at the Staten Island Cross Race they had one set up with 29er tubeless wheels, disc brakes an…

To chime in on "checking the tires after wet weather" from Chris: If you're 1) not using the Belgian method or 2) using 3M FastTack you need to check your tire/rim contact after all wet races, pressure washing or general "sitting around". RE 1): E…

New York, NY
About Me:
Founder of Echappe Equipment, a race wheel rental program. After I graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design I started racing on the road. I had always mountain biked, so racing cross seemed pretty logical to me. I turned out to be pretty decent and have won a few east coast pro races in the past year (2008).
Current Bike Collection:
CX: Redline Conquest Pro
Road (Race): Van Dessel Hellafaster, Shimano mix
Road (training): CAAD 9 with Shimano mix, powercranks
TT: Cannondale Slice with Shimano mix
Track: Some crap bike I got on eBay.
Favorite Race:
Hmm. Augusta in New Jersey I've won a few times, but I still like Chainbiter and Gloucester.
Dream Bike:
Those Ridleys sure are nice...
Favorite thing about cyclocross:
The intensity. The Focus.
How long have you been racing cyclocross?

I do not have any race experience, might kinda sound silly but I have only done a couple of weekly practices with the local hometown club, before I came to Iraq. Some how by doing two weekly practices, and riding by my self I got addicted and want to race. Kind of poserish. I just order a Rock Lobster Team Scandium frame w/ a alpha-q fork. I have been training for the last 6 months, and am going to work hard through winter and summer. I want to try to get to CAT 2 if I can next session I know its a big goal. My budget is $700.00 for a wheelset.

Hey, I went to your site. I was wondering what would be the best tubular wheelset for racing?

Hey Hey. I've been thinking along the same lines for Nationals. We actually raced at the venue a couple weeks back, so I got to scope it out. There will be some logistical challenges, but best thing would be to get there early, setup, and leave it. I'll mail you some more details.
