Saw your conversation about converting a bike between SS and geared for races on the same day. I think you'll need to change the chain like you had mentioned. You can use the derailleur as a tensioner, but you'll need to shorten the chain to bring the lower pulley forward to take advantage of all the spring tension you can get from the derailleur. You need to have the chain as tight (and therefore as short) as you can to keep it from skipping gears, especially with all the bouncing in cross.
