I run a 44 c-c bar on the road, so do I keep that on the cross bike or go a little more narrow to a 42 c-c? the 42's match my shoulder width, and the 44's are past my armpit on both sides.

I say go wide for cross. I think it helps a bit with stability and leverage on the climbs.
i use 42 on the road bikes and fixed gear and recently went from 40 to 44 on the SS cx bike......WHAT A DIFFERENCE,
the leverage and control gained by switching to wider bars is incredible
I run the same width bar on both road and cx bikes.
Ride what feels right to you. That's the only guideline that really matters.
For cross, wide is right. Better control and better breathing when you're going full gas. For the record I run 40cm on the road and 42cm on the cyclocross bikes
run the narrowest bars possible on the road bike, and the widest ones on cross...

i've got a set of 46 Bontrager Race Lites that i really like... i'd be happier going wider in the same bend, but then I'm also 6'6"
cool, I used to ride 42's on the road and when I moved to 44's I instantly felt better. Guess I'll stick to my oval concept R701 44's then
