i've been racing bikes since 7, and now that I'm a master, I guess I have to admit that's a damn long time. I did my first 'cross race in '91 in new england, and have been hooked since in a bad way.
Current Bike Collection:
yes, i've got a problem.
cross: GSR (by sycip), bianchi cross concept, zebrakenko (ss), mondiale ti, airborne ti, kona yee-haw (commuter), dean 853.
road: what's that? '93 cannondale 2.8, specialized tarmac pro
mountain: bridgetsone mb-3, gary fisher procaliber oclv, trek olv stp, fisher 29er, biscayne old school 80's mtb
Favorite Race:
wednesday night!
Dream Bike:
calfee custom bamboo cyclocross
Favorite thing about cyclocross:
1) simplicity of riding your bike over any surface as fast as possible
2) community
3) spectator friendly
4) bikes!
5) keeps me off the couch just when my less-evolved body wants to hibernate and pack on the pounds
No not that lucky, I've built them all up from frames, apart from my road bike which I purchased complete. My good friend and fellow cyclist owns the local bike shop so he gives me a good discout.
I've sent you a picture of my shed or "la velo hutte" that's my second home.
The Redline indeed rocks. I'll post a photo later. Can't wait for CX to start! I've recruited 2 friends, one of whom already got a bike; the other is working on it. Thanks for providing this distraction!
"Favorite thing about cyclocross:
5) keeps me off the coach just when my less-evolved body wants to hibernate and pack on the pounds"
This confused me. You must have a hot chick for a coach and your diminshed self esteem when your "less-evolved body wants to hibernate and pack on the pounds" prevents you from getting on her! You're lucky for having a coach at all. If I were you and had a hot chick for a coach, I'd probably try to get her on the COUCH!
Yeah, that's me suffering the last race of last season in Watsonville. The photographer's name is Pamela who posts photos on Flicker under the name Bici Girl - you can find it here http://www.flicker.com/photos/bicigirl/2224580327/. I contacted her through Flicker and she sent me a Hi Rez copy the same day. If you don't have luck getting a hold of her, let me know and I'll send her an email. ~Geoff
That was the most ridiculous race I ever did. 2006 NYS Cross Championships. Standing water on the grass sections made everything a slick mud pit. Then we went into a singletrack section where it was about 2 inches deep of dirt/pine needles/rotten leaves. I actually managed to ride it for half the race until I gave up and ran it the rest. Still one of the most fun days I had ever had on a cross bike.
I'm making a late season run at it this season, 7 weeks in the motherland after nats. Not sure what the deal will be for me with a cross column this year... If I have the motivation, I'll let you know. I saw Jason this summer ... Sounded like he was working 60 hour weeks ... Bummer.
Never heard back if you want some old and fully functional tubulars for CX Magazine experiments. Let me know and I'll drop them in the mail to you, or can hand them off if your up in downtown SF sometime.
1. I've got a thread open at Fixed Gear Fever about grass track racing. I'm learning a lot. Guess where it is really popular? Trinidad! No kidding.
2. There is a thread open on the CX Magazine forums page about Tom Boonen's tires for Paris-Roubaix. At some point, I expect we'll see each other this season. When we do, try and remind me, as I've got a great story to tell about that particular photo.
3. I've never held a green Michelin Mud in my hand before tonight. I've got to tell you, they nailed it with those tires. Tubeless-compatible, no. But, boy, oh boy are they nice.
it's super stable, and responsive. I love the road feel, with just that little extra. the stock fork was def better for long cruises (50mi plus rides) but this fork option gives me a more reponsinve steering and tighter technical control.
In answer to your question: "When someone flats do they have to pay, and what is your cheapest rental for CX wheels?"
1) You do not have to pay for flats IF you get crash insurance. Crash insurance covers everything "race related". Also, instead of valve extenders, we actually set up all 'cross wheels with core extenders. This prevents valves from banging around and bleeding air which we found happens a lot with valve extenders. Once core extenders were converted to all our wheels, we never had a bleed problem again.
2) Our cheapest race wheel rental for 2009-2010 is $50 credit/$40 cash for the Echappe Classics, HED Bastognes and HED Ardennes. The Ardennes will be tubeless this season, as will a set or two of DuraAce 24mm wheels.
For Standard Rentals, carbon tubulars are $75-$125. Depends really on MSRP of the product.
For the best deal, get a Day Pass. This is a program we experimented with during the 2008-09 cross season and it went over very well. We have been selling a number of them for the road riders currently and expect the 'cross riders to make use of this feature as well.
Good luck in seattle this weekend...I however will be out of town, kind of a bummer because this is only one of a few times that I'm missing Starcrossed...URG!!! I'll be rooting for you and Jonathan Page!!!! HUP HUP HUP!!!
Not really!! I am going to be in western wyoming mtbing and fly fishing, then the tetons and ending in yellowstone...total cx withdraw!!! Hey have you found a bike yet? You need a 56?
Wyoming was fantastic. Had a really great time, it is a whole different world overthere! Went Mtb'ing a few times and fished A LOT! My Nephew landed a 26 inch german brown trout!!! Biggest freshwater fish he had ever caught.
I think I am leaving this message to the right person. Have you CXmag folks ever thought of getting a rep in with the Spokesmen podcast? Just a suggestion. Or atleast maybe get an interview in with the Fredcast and spread the love.
Andrew, fork chatter article was well done and timely! I was on that forum thread with the person who was putting motor oil on their rims! One lingering question I had was about rider weight. I would assume that the heavier the rider the worse the chatter, what are your thoughts? Thanks and I can’t say enough how awesome the site, forum and especially the print mag is.
No sweat. I have a stock redline cro-mo (or whatever alloy) fork. I just set it up with a steer tube cable stop high straddle cable and way toed in pads. This worked fine when dry but wet weather is a different story my next thing I going to try per the issue 8 article is shorter road style pads. But I'm in no big rush I'm waiting for the shorty ultimate’s, then I'll really worry about set up. Hey! also the tubular wheel test/buyers guide in 8 was well put together , not just specs, but real world insight. I would have never known that $220 could get me a complete wheelset! Thanks again...
Holy Crap! I just received issue 10 in the mail today are you freaking kidding me? It is AWESOME! The new layout is absolutely wonderful and I noticed that there are more ads BUT they are pertinent to Cyclocross… bravo. See you at Starcrossed!
i'll see if i have a short video of riders entering the sandpit/beach...one guy rides through a bunch of it while most hoisted the bike...you can hear his grinding gears!
the pic shown (if it works) is after the long beach part and up the steps and then another 50 feet or so of sand up to the asphalt...

World Champs in Louisville? I'm totally still in.
I'm going to try and do some minimal coverage of other regional stuff as well.
