I'm buying a new pair of racing dogs. Any ideas for cross and mtb. Budget is @$100. I have Shimano 180? from 2000 the blue ones and they are too stiff in the sole and slip off the heel a bit in hike a bike or running sections. I'm looking at the sh-182 which sometimes is on sale around $100.

i picked up a pair of sidi two stapper mt shoes for cheap on close out... they worked great, not as well as the doms but pretty damn good considering they were $25 on the clearance rack. Just picked up some Specialized something carbon for under $100 (last year close out) and they are working actually pretty damn well. Very stiff sole, but a robust and solid heel cup, no slip for me. Had to get rid of the silly painful body geometry insoles, man did they suck.

and yes, i realize mentioning that I raced a season on $25 shoes and soon to be $100 shoes does make me sound a bit cheap, well, i am... *shrug*

I haven't run shimano shoes in a long time but they always fell apart long before my Sidi's. Heck i'd still be running my mid 90s Dominators if the yellow sole hadn't delaminated. The uppers are still in killer shape. This is the first run with the Specialized shoes, so i dunno, i've heard good stuff, and the price and fit was right.
hey there. here are a few past discussions that might help:

Budget Cross Shoes
Replacing Sidis

Depends a lot on your foot though. I've liked Lakes, esp. with the laces, and the mx165 has been around that price at times, and comes in widths, and their soles are pretty grippy (vibram) but heavy. the Northwaves are wider but have some flex. Time's newer shoes are decent, a little wide. Louis Garneau had some nice, 'cross worth shoes on display at Interbike.
