Tufo (or other) - tubular for clincher? open tubulars?

Hey guys, So I'm in a bit of a pickle with tires/wheels. I'm a 200 lb Cat 3 rider, and after taco'ing a Stan's Iron Cross front wheel, I decided to run Mavic Cross Max SL wheels (with disc brakes).…Continue

Hey guys, I' like to get a spare wheelset for the CX season, and to use there after on the road, etc. and I need some advice.  I'm 200lbs, Cat 4, and I need to keep this wheelset cheap, ie, a used…Continue

Reverse brake lever setup on Ridley X Fire

Hey guys, I'm curious on the best setup for reverse brake levers on the Ridley X Fire. What are you guys doing, especially with the rear cable routing? I'm not worried about the front, it's the rear…Continue

"Easy, Nathan. Get a set of hubs (32h or 36h) and have them built up to Velocity Major Toms.  You could probably find some older Deore hubs (36h) that are almost bullet-proof for very little.   I'm also around 200 and have raced a…"

"Hmm, ok. If I go tubular, then the main thing will be to get as strong a wheelset as possible. What would be stronger than the Crossmax29?"

Chris Mayhew replied to Nathan Masek's discussion Tufo (or other) - tubular for clincher? open tubulars?
"I'm not sure the Tufo tires are still around in that model. They weren't that great to begin with and you can roll them off too. I've done it. They are a pain to mount too. Open tubular is a clincher of a certain make, so it's…"

Tufo - tubular for clincher?

Hey guys, So I'm in a bit of a pickle with tires/wheels. I'm a 200 lb Cat 3 rider, and after taco'ing a Stan's Iron Cross front wheel, I decided to run Mavic Cross Max SL wheels (with disc brakes).  I love the wheels, but I'm running tubeless tires and I'd like to explore the option for tubulars. RIght now I have to run about 40lb and am wary dipping below that pressure as anything lower seems to be the burping point.  I'd like to be able to run slightly lower pressure with perhaps tubulars,…See More

"Mike, at 175 you should be ok.  I'd have the LBS tighten the spokes, 1 lb more than stock, then have them lock tight the nipples."

"My wheels say "Comp" which are the cheaper/heavier ones with higher spoke count at least! 195lb max rider. The "Pro" are 185lb. Still a little close for my comfort (just weighed myself at 175). I just bought them as a great deal…"

"I'll check my spokes and trueness tomorrow. I've got three good rides on them so far. I ride single speed so do put some heft on them. Will expand my wheel search to include 29ers. I also saw some 26mm wide rim ones."

"On my old cross bike that had a round top tube, I used a section of black pipe insulation as padding. Very ghetto, but it worked awesome and made it easy on my boney shoulder."

"So, after a bit of consideration and this discussion, I think I'm going to stop messing around and go with a Mavic Crossmax 29 wheel for the rear. I'll probably run the Iron Cross front for the rest of the season to allow the funds to…"

"So is there a consensus that Iron Cross wheels come badly built? I just got a new set and am about to do my first race Saturday... I'm 180lb... gulp. One thing else I was expecting a 10spd hub but I think mine is 11spd - I put a surly spacer…"

Spare wheelset recommendations, big rider (2 bills)

Hey guys, I' like to get a spare wheelset for the CX season, and to use there after on the road, etc. and I need some advice.  I'm 200lbs, Cat 4, and I need to keep this wheelset cheap, ie, a used set but I'll need disc hubs plus I'm running tubeless.  I have not seen much discussion on wheels for the big guys, so what are some recommendations?     thanks mucho,NathanSee More
