Race Report: Surf City Cyclocross (Or, Yes, I Brought My Bike To A Nerd Convention)

What: Surf City Cyclocross, Men's C (what these NorCal hippy freaks call Cat 4)

Where: Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds, Interlaken, CA

When: Halloween, 9am

Who: Me and 30 new friends

How: Second to last place, baby!

I'm in San Jose at the World Fantasy Convention, commuting with my nerdy people and talking about the importance of gun play and crashing zeppelins in your modern fantasy novel, all done in a bar the size of a tennis court. This is awesome, but it means… Continue

Thanks to The Bikery in Stillwater, MN!

Since both Wisconsin Cycling Association CX races were cancelled this weekend due to foul weather and the park managers' unwillingness to let 'crossers tear up the land, I headed over to neighboring Minnesota for the Jackson Meadows CX race sponsored by The Bikery. I have to say the course was fast and bumpy but in an excellent location. The weather was nice and the people were very welcoming, even though the couse wasn't very spectator-friendly. I got lots of encouragement on the… Continue

Race Report: Long Beach Cross - Back On The Humpy Bumpy

What: Long Beach Cross (SoCal Prestige Series #6) Men's 4s

Where: El Dorado Regional Park

When: Sunday, October 18

Who: Me, Paul, Aaron (Liza did the Women's 3-4) and 50 of our closest friends

How: 24th for Aaron, 39th for me, DNF for Paulie (boo!)

It's not the gravel, it's not the sand, it's not the one-eighty switchbacks and run-ups through fire hoops that hurt. It's the gopher-hole-infested, melon-ball-from-hell divotted, semi-cared-for-by-LA-Parks-And-Rec… Continue

Oh, glorious night!

Twenty-three of us toed the line this week, the course was dry and fast, everyone's bike was clean at the end of the night, and there was lots of chatter about heading down to Cary and Raleigh this weekend to go school the Flatlanders at the… Continue

Badger Prairie Cross

Fall is clearly a season of transition. As the weather crosses over from long warm days to short brisk ones now is the time to make a similar shift in how you recreate outside. For many in southern Wisconsin, particularly those who love to bike, cyclocross is the ideal changeover sport to bridge the cool autumn months before the first snowfall.

“I am all over this,” said Ryan Griessmeyer, “It’s a whole new breed of sport for me,… Continue

Don't miss any racing due to a cold this year.

My wife and I have been into natural health for nearly 20 years. During my studies as a Naturopath, I have come to subscribe to teh biological terrain theories. One of my mentors,Steven Horne, as well as other great Naturpaths including J.H. Tilden, have been teaching this methodology for nearly a century. So, it is not a new idea. Steven Horne is confident that we can shorten the time it takes to recover from a cold or a flu to 24 hours or less. He states that you can even be over an acute… Continue

2009 Surf City #1

Surf City #1, Soquel High School, Soquel. After last weeks total kick in the kidneys I was looking forward to a flatter course, and Soquel HS is pretty flat. Also it's a great venue. I had thought going into this season I had a better fitness base than last year. Not entirely evidenced by last weeks performance, I was humbled in the reality that I may be in better shape to start the season that last year, but don't go thinking I'm in great shape. Regardless I looked forward to this race as the… Continue

First post since last season; BASP #1

BASP #1: McLaren Park, SF. Once again Tom Simpson has punched us all in the collective gullet for the series opener. The upside is that it's done. I don't hate this course the way some others do, although it's not friendly to anyone whose not in total supreme shape, which I'm not. In December, this course would be better for me, since I'll be stronger then than now. But it's the opener, and it's hard. The course this year is the 4th version in as many years, and I think that's a good thing. I… Continue

What is Optimum Health

It is not possible to achieve optimum health without knowing what it is. Optimum means of the greatest degree. It is the highest level that can be obtained or achieved. When applied to health, it means, on the surface, the healthiest we can be. It is more than that.

Many people believe that health is nothing but the absence of disease. If the medical establishment has not pinned a disease on you, then you must be healthy. This cannot be further from the truth. Health exists on… Continue

Let's Hear It for the Guys and Gals at the Back of the Pack!

Yesterday's race was quite fast with a few rollers, two sets of barriers and a killer run-up. (I hear that some people were riding it...Grrr.) I felt good for the most part but I definitely suffered there on the last lap. However, I consider it a success to have finished the race and without being lapped by those skinny guys this time!

Let's hear it for the bottom 10 of the the field! It's not a very prestigeous place in terms of the ranking; but there's a definite bond of kindred… Continue
